A wireless message alerting the public to an emergency situation at its nuclear power plant in Brownville was mistakenly issued Sunday, the Nebraska Public Power District said, then quickly corrected.
NPPD said the alert by the National Weather Service was issued to the public, media and various governmental agencies in southeast Nebraska at 3:48 p.m. Thirteen minutes later, a second message was issued by the weather service and a note was posted on its website stating that the first broadcast was a mistake and that it had been issued inadvertently, NPPD said.
Nemaha County in southeast Nebraska and Atchison County in northwest Missouri also issued messages through Facebook and press releases correcting the weather services inadvertent alert, NPPD said.
Weather service personnel Sunday were updating wording that is programmed into a computer system when the alert was mistakenly broadcast, NPPD said.
