Orlando drops eminent domain action against church, to move soccer stadium farther west

The city of Orlando announced this morning that it is dropping eminent-domain proceedings against a church that has stood in the way of Orlando's Major League Soccer stadium. Instead, the city and will move the planned new stadium farther to the west.

The city had been at odds with Faith Deliverance Temple, which had been the last holdout standing in the way of the stadium.

The $110 million stadium was originally supposed to be built on two square blocks along West Church Street, but the church's property sits directly in the middle. The city initially offered $1.5 million for the property – more than twice the appraised value – but church leaders said that wasn't enough and countered with a selling price of $35 million.

The city eventually raised its offer to $4 million and the church dropped its price to $15 million

At least back in my day anyway.

1.5 million seems pretty low.

The government should not be seizing private property to benefit corporate profits.
