Robert Reich: Work and worth

What someone is paid has little or no relationship to what their work is worth to society.

Does anyone seriously believe hedge-fund mogul Steven A. Cohen is worth the $2.3 billion he raked in last year, despite being slapped with a $1.8 billion fine after his firm pleaded guilty to insider trading?

On the other hand, what’s the worth to society of social workers who put in long and difficult hours dealing with patients suffering from mental illness or substance abuse? Probably higher than their average pay of $18.14 an hour, which translates into less than $38,000 a year.

Nixon suggested that they should get his salary and he get theirs. He was right about both statements.

Two countries in America. They are totally different.
The wealthy and the poor.
If you are among the vast majority of Americans, you are totally fucked.
We need a revolution.
Bernie Sanders would be a revolution. No killing just some honesty and fairness.
Democratic socialism for ALL.
Sports stars, entertainers, etc. are all worth (?) much, much, much more than teachers, all service people, etc.
Just like old Rome. If we do not change it, it will be a miserable life for most, still..

You're not paid what you're worth to society, but what you're worth to someone who is willing to give you money to do whatever it is you do. If you help bring in a lot of money, you'll be paid a lot of money. If your job doesn't bring in revenue, you probably won't be well paid.

Teachers don't bring in money. Neither do social workers. Nobody pays to go watch them do their job. Athletes or movie stars help get people to buy expensive tickets, or get media companies to pay stupid amounts of money, to watch them do their thing. In our increasingly abstract reality, hedge fund moguls make a lot of money for someone, so they get a lot of money.
