At least 367 people have died and more than 1,800 have been injured after an earthquake struck south-west China yesterday, toppling homes and sending residents fleeing into the streets, the state broadcaster, CCTV, reported.
A further 181 are missing after the 6.1-magnitude quake hit Ludian county, in a mountainous area about 225 miles north-east of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, the state news agency Xinhua reported. State media said the tremor was felt in the neighbouring provinces of Guizhou and Sichuan.
Photographs showed rescuers digging through rubble and taking the injured to hospital. Teams were on Sunday night still trying to reach some of the remoter areas such as Longtoushan township, the epicentre of the quake.

(15,035 posts)Living as I do on the "Rim of Fire," I've come to expect that such events will occur and that the full impact is never known until quite some hours (if not days) after the event. I needed, I hope the Chinese will accept aid from other nations and not try to gloss over the impact.

(269,022 posts)We're on a fault as well and we're overdue a big one. Last really big one was 1907 but the big one in Haiti a few years ago was a reminder that a big one will come one day or night. There's isn't much you can do other after you build following regulations and know what to do if one comes.

(15,035 posts)but the one comfort I do have is that earthquakes come unannounced and rarely last for very long. I don't have to sit and watch an earthquake make its way across the Caribbean or watch earthquake cells develop over my state or neighboring towns, like those faced with hurricanes and tornados must do. Small comfort, to be sure, but as you point out, once we've built to regulations, and stocked up on emergency supplies, there's not much more that can be done.
