Please excuse me for being too sanctimonious.

sanc·ti·mo·ni·ous (sngkt-mn-s)
pretending to be morally better than other people

Oh wait, I am morally better than people who torture.

Never mind.

"It's important for us not to feel too sanctimonious in retrospect about the tough job that those folks had," he said. "A lot of those folks were working hard under enormous pressure and are real patriots."

I'm sure every empire has said something similar about their past actions. "Mistakes were made, but they were done in good faith" or other such claptrap.

“There were a lot of gods. Gods always come in handy, they justify almost anything.”
― Margaret Atwood, The Blind Assassin

“It is in the nature of the human being to seek a justification for his actions.”
― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago, 1918-1956: An Experiment in Literary Investigation V-VII

2. In the grand tradition of Rahm's "fucking retards"; It's Obama's "sanctimonious"

I made myself listen to his press conference to the bitter end, and was nauseous from early on.

In addition to his total support for the Israelis, torture and the CIA, he offended me at the get-go with his rah-rah flaunting of job statistics. Those statistics are so bogus, failing to count as they do, the unemployed who have used up their unemployment benefits, & failing to differentiate between people working part time with no benefits (after losing full time jobs with benefits) and people with said full time jobs & benefits. Companies are still down-sizing. I personally know four people between the ages of 45 and 55 who have just been "let go" (within the past month) by their employers - not because the companies were in financial distress, but just to increase profits.

And for those (and there's always one) who will challenge criticism of Rahm:

"Fucking Retards": Why Didn't Rahm Emanuel Apologize to Liberals?
Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that during a private conversation in August 2009, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said that liberal critics of conservative and moderate Democrats were "fucking retards." Cute. According to ABC News, however, Emanuel has offered an apology to the "disabled community" for his remarks. Although he has acknowledged making the statement, Emanuel has not apologized to liberals.

Emanuel and other close advisers of President Obama have frequently criticized liberals. After the White House instructed Senate Democrats to capitulate to Senator Joe Lieberman's request that they drop the public health plan option, many liberals denounced the move and demanded that Democrats in turn reject the Senate bill. In response, White House senior staff separately referred to liberals as "irrational" and "insane." By describing liberals as "fucking retards," Emanuel is simply toeing the White House line in an effort to isolate politically and to show contempt for progressives.

12. not the old saw about the unemployed

people do not stop being counted as unemployed just because they have used up all their unemployment benefits.

Although there are some, like my boss's wife, who, once her unemployment benefits ran out, stopped pretending to look for work.p

And no matter how many people are working part time who used to work full time, or who would like to work full time (I am going the other way next month, from full time to part time) it is stil better for the economy to creat 200,000 jobs than for it to create less than that.

If you are willing to admit we 'tortured some folks' then you have to likewise admit that torture is a criminal act, and that it should be prosecuted. As should those who ordered that torture, as well as those who followed the orders.

And NONE of them are patriots. And for the love of all that's holy, quit making excuses for criminals.

6. It's his take on the Senate report on the aftermath of 9/11

but others have noted that the report itself stops short of labeling anything done as torture.

So the chances that any prosecutions will occur even of the direct, hands-on torturers is slim, much less those who ordered them to do so.
