http://www.politico.com/story/2014/08/eric-cantor-resigned-109659.html
"In his decision to quit Congress altogether, Eric Cantor gave only one reason: so his successor could get a head start and have a voice in what will be a very consequential lame-duck session.
But several GOP lawmakers and aides suggested to POLITICO that there was more to this move. The last thing he wanted, they said, was to endure the humbling shift from 11 years in the leadership to being a back bencher, even if only for four months. And, they said he was already focused on the next chapter of his life in the private sector.
Although members can explore new job opportunities while still in office, his departure from Congress means that Cantor wont have to disclose any companies or firms with whom he may be negotiating for a job.
Cantor never moved to the small Capitol office space he was scheduled to take over as a consolation prize for losing his sprawling majority leader suite. Several Republicans said that as soon as Canter lost to economics professor Dave Brat in the Republican primary June 10, there were signs that he wasnt going to finish out his term."

(9,522 posts)Just shows how people like Cantor and Palin are in politics for their own ego gratification, nothing more.
Major Hogwash
(17,656 posts)It seems to me that Cantor was way more moderate when he first went to Congress.
But, as he saw the pendulum swing so far to the right, he was one of those pushing it even farther to the right, in order to climb up in the Republican ranks.
Pendulums in clocks tend to swing back, though.
So, sad to say, it was the clapper that got Cantor.

He took his ball and went home, too. These GOPers. They're all hot air and big ego. And when they get deflated, they aren't man enough to stick around til their job is fully completed.
Cowards.

(17,379 posts)Going from House Majority Leader to lame duck backbencher must be an incredibly frustrating prospect.
The sooner he starts his new life outside of Congress, the better off we all will be.

(50,559 posts)Cantor has a very fat rolodex. He's headed for a C-level position somewhere...not because anyone owes him, but because he knows everyone who can get corporations what they want - tax breaks, deregulation and government contracts.

(21,925 posts)Every one of these goddamned politicians on both sides of the aisle seems to have an ego bigger than the great outdoors and almost consider themselves royalty. I think his early departure might also be due to the fact the POS doesn't want to squander four months of high salary he could be making as a lobbyist and negotiating a fat contract now rather than at the end of the term when others might be out of work too is to his advantage. It often, maybe not always, might be all about the money.
Punkingal
(9,522 posts)He thinks it's okay to spend money on a special election, caused by his unwillingness to fulfill his obligation to the people who elected him. Don't get me wrong...I'm no fan and I'm glad he's gone, but to me this resigning from office in a snit is pretty shallow. It proves without a doubt he has no real ideals. Just wants money and power.

(429 posts)Good! Get the 99% hater out of our sight. But we know he will now take a job out of view that will hurt the 99% even more than he already has. These republicans really do hate America and all it stands for.

(21 posts)Cator merely represents the current state of the Republican party - poor losers. That is exactly what prompted the actions against Clinton and it is exactly what is motivating them now trying to impeach Obama. WATB's all of them. More interested in self promotion and lining their own pockets rather than in doing what they were elected to do. Palin and Cantor are merely examples of this personality defect, IMO.

(82,849 posts)Sort of like sitting in the penalty box in hockey. He has to wait a year before he can get to lobbying his former colleagues and refilling the old coffers (as the wealthy George W. Bush put it, who's never in his life wondered where his next meal was coming from). I mean, you try getting by on a measly $174,000 annual salary. You can see why Mr. Cantor has to get going on his next "career" as soon as possible.

We might as well institute "Term Limits" because if these guys and gals (mostly guys) don't Get What they Want in First or Second Term...they are Out the Door to make it on Wall Street/Corporte Sector or whomever pays them the most for their "Expertise."
