(1,245 posts)Pretty good on gas and last forever.
I guess if you think 16-mpg is "good on gas."

(1,245 posts)Mine gets 18 in the city. We can't all drive a Prius. And thanks for the passive aggressive emoticon.

(33,982 posts)Not to shit on you for it or anything, if it's what you've got, it's what you've got. No worries there.
I would not characterize it as 'pretty good' gas mileage though.
secondvariety
(1,245 posts)miles on it? My 1996 big ass Ford product does. That car has paid for itself 3 times over. My 2010 two door (who cares how many door it has?) work truck only gets 10.9 mph and isn't near as comfortable.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)I only mentioned the number of doors as in, it's a full-sized truck. (For comparison)
Our Tracker has over 200k, and gets much better mileage than that. Not sure what the mileage has to do with it.
For comparison, over a 200k mile lifespan, my truck will consume about 8,695 gallons of fuel. Your car, about 11,111 gallons. (how wierd is that?)
That's $35,649 versus $45,555 worth of fuel at today's prices (low octane). You can get a new car for the difference, like a nissan versa, and get 27/36.
And that comparison was against a truck. For a truck, I would characterize it as pretty good on fuel, but as a vehicle, all around, 23 is pretty bad. An all wheel drive all the time subaru will hit that, no problem, and that's a highly inefficient powertrain. My car gets about 38. That's pretty good, especially for a non-hybrid.
Questions of whether it is paid off, or how many miles it has lasted, etc, are all immaterial to the poster you were responding to, as he objected only to the characterization of your car as being pretty good on gas.

(5,330 posts)But when I think of "pretty good" gas mileage, I'm thinking of 30-mpg at the bare minimum, which is what my 1998 Chevy Cavalier averages, and it only set me back $2200 when I bought it a year ago.
You don't have to spend big money for an decently efficient car, just need to do a little bit of research before you buy.
secondvariety
(1,245 posts)but the Crown Vic will be running long after the Cavalier turns to dust. There's a reason police depts. use them instead of Cavaliers. People drive what they drive-shouldn't be a big deal.
FogerRox
(13,211 posts)And even in city stop and go driving you'll never get worse than 18 mpg.
Not exactly a Chevy Cruz though....
LAGC
(5,330 posts)I'm usually pretty happy if my car engines make it to 200K.
My Chevy was a real steal with less than 100K miles on it for a 13-year-old vehicle, so I jumped all over it. Hope to make it last until electric/hybrid cars really come down in price around 2020 or so.
FogerRox
(13,211 posts)that 500k too.
Thegonagle
(806 posts)on gas, but there's a reason this class of car (full-size sedan with body-on-frame construction) is largely extinct: Because they're way too heavy to ever fit most people's definition of "good on gas."
Now, I wouldn't buy one myself, but I'm no snob. I can say with certainty that they are good, durable cars that are comfortable for big guys (like the bouncers where I work), and one can purchase and maintain one fairly cheaply. If someone doesn't have to drive very far or very often, and isn't comfortable in a small car, a used one can be a good, "economical" choice irrespective of the cost of gas.
Plus, driving an old cop car is kind of cool.
guitar man
(15,996 posts)It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

It turned out his name was Al Parker and he just wanted everybody to know who owned the car.
