Booman Tribune: Here's what the final collapse of the Republicans will look like.

When the End Comes, It Will Be Sudden
by BooMan
Mon Jul 21st, 2014 at 01:01:14 PM EST

........................

I have a theory that when the Republican Party finally collapses as a national party it will happen suddenly and without much warning. It could happen as early as this November, although I am not ready to make that prediction just yet. If it does happen this year, though, this is what it will look like. Incumbent Republican governors will lose across the board, from Florida to Maine to Pennsylvania to Michigan to Ohio to Wisconsin. At the same time, the GOP will fail to pick up more than one or two Senate seats, failing to win seats even in Deep South states like Georgia, Arkansas, and Louisiana. And they'll lose control of the House by surrendering seats that are designed to be invulnerable. The popular vote will run heavily against them and the damage will only be mitigated by the way the maps have been drawn and the tendency of liberals to cluster together in urban areas.

Then, the party will fail to coalesce around a candidate who is willing to make terms with where the country actually is on women's issues, immigration, education, climate, or gay rights, leading them to nominate someone as far outside of the mainstream as the party faithful. Think Ted Cruz, Rick Santorum, Rand Paul, or even Paul Ryan.

This would probably lead to the kind of Electoral College defeat experienced by Walter Mondale or George McGovern, with numerous "red states" crossing over to vote for sanity. And, at this point, the GOP would be reduced back down to where they were in the mid to early sixties. To come back, they'd need the left to fracture in 1968 fashion.

This is where we're headed. It could come as soon as November, although it could also be delayed into the latter half of the twenties. A lot will depend on economic and international conditions on each coming election day, and the GOP has a lot of artificial advantages plus a willingness to engage in various forms of suppression and chicanery. But the game is nonetheless up. The best movement conservatism can hope for at this point is a flash in the pan confluence of bad news timed at just the right moment to give them the unlikeliest of national victories. This country has totally moved on from their ideology.

The Republicans fight it because their base is usually retired and willing to stand in long lines. Democrats are much more diverse and voting by mail would be a game changer.

Where I live is blood red and will remain so for a long time to come.

On a broader scale, how many devoted Faux News viewers are there? Dues paying party faithful? Millions.

A big feather in their caps (as far as holding on to their base) is that the black guy will be in the WH for another 2+ years

That the Democratic party has completed their rightward shift enough that all the fiscal conservative feel completely and totally comfortable and welcome in our party.

They don't now and still our leadership caters to them at every possible turn. imagine when their votes actually become a possibility?

The establishment republicans have already woken up to the fact that "crazy ante portas". Being part of the Tea Party guarantees votes on the far-right spectrum, but no matter how HARD they vote, they are still worth only 1 vote and they drive all the other voters away.

I think, the scheming behind the scenes has already begun to put a leash on the Tea Party. (Boehner blatantly manipulated a vote at the RNC to that end!!!) Problem: The Tea Party doesn't understand that they are bad for the GOP and counter-attacks.

The healthy step would be to split the GOP into two parties, but the US election- and party-system is geared towards EXACTLY TWO major parties and can't handle that. That's why Tea Party and Establishment will keep fighting over who's the "real" conservative and that fight will make it easier for the Democrats:

On a subconscious level, every voter wants a party who can get shit done.
Ideology comes second.
And the Republicans can't get shit done.

Tales of Republican collapse are like the Big One in California.

Do parties collapse? Yes. Last major one in this country was the Whigs before the Civil War. Shit, civilizations collapse, too. The end of the United States as we know it will come in time. The question is when?

Collapses when they come can be sudden and surprising. But they can also be protracted, endless affairs.

Don't hang your hat on this being sudden and soon.

It's an interesting scenario, but big business/Wall St. will be in there fighting to vote in their lackeys and may be able to hold on to enough anti-tparty repubs to keep the House majority. The repubs will be so scared by the losses that they will cling to the business interests and repudiate the tparty. By 2016 the repubs will have found a candidate acceptable to their business backers.

What will the Koch brothers do then?

As happens to all extremist groups, the tparty will lose the support of those who are tired of losing as well as those that are expelled in the cause of ideological purity. Some might even recognize the successes of the Obama administration!!! (ha, ha).

There will be the problem of the die-hards, some of whom will become more violent in the face of their losses. Unfortunately for those in the conspiracy bubble, all events will confirm their paranoia.

without the southern strategy and the theocratic streak running wild if it is anytime soon.

The Republicans are relentless, they will just snipe from the wilderness for a while until memories fade and pass away and sanity becomes old hat rather than give up on their core ideology, which is all about avarice and fear. They also by nature of their aims, don't need to be actually in charge of anything to maintain progress toward their agendas partially because of be gremlins in the works, partially because of heel digging intransigence, and partly because there are always allies to pick off and others than can be herded on our side.

Hopefully but other than the core ideology and money changing hosts, we will have to actually oppose them and offer a different path rather than hope they will just go away.
