'Hypocrites!': Hollande hits back at Cameron attacking France selling warships to Russia while oligarchs seek refuge in LondonBitter divisions over the way Europe stands up to Vladimir Putin have spilled into the open, with France branding Britain 'hypocrites' for allowing London to be a refuge for Russian oligarchs.
David Cameron has warned it would be 'unthinkable' for French President Francois Hollande to go ahead with the £950million sale of Mistral warships to Moscow.
But Mr Hollande has vowed not to ditch the deal, with the head of his ruling Socialist Party warning Mr Cameron he should 'start by cleaning up his own backyard'.
Mr Cameron has warned other European countries they must all share the burden of imposing tougher sanctions on Russia.
The Prime Minister admits that the UK economy could suffer from curbs on financial deals with Russia, but insists the consequences of failing to act could be far worse.

The resolution to the problems with Russia are really economic and political and not military. I see no military option to contain Putin other than to ensure our NATO partners and the Ukraine have sufficient defense to ward off any direct attack by Russia.
But if we look at the countries with the largest military budgets for 2014 we find the following list:
#10 South Korea
#9 India
#8 Japan
#7 GERMANY
#6 UK
#5 FRANCE
#4 Saudi Arabia
#3 Russia
#2 China
#1 USA
So 3 of our allies are among the top spenders on "military" but we saw even in Iraq and Afghanistan their commitments are in terms of hundreds of soldiers and support personnel versus the U.S. supplying tens of thousands.
I am afraid that our allies have come to take the U.S. umbrella for granted. We need to pull back and let them shoulder some of the human and treasury cost for their own defense.

(2,992 posts)Not to mention disastrous home politics...I feel more and more ashamed to be Hollandes fellow citizen. The worst of this is that from my little corner I share responsability for this whole mess. I did vote for him to avoid a RW Sarkozy second term, in the election second round....
