Family considers killing 10-year-old daughter after mullah rapes her in Afghanistan mosque

It was bad enough that the alleged rape took place in the sanctity of a mosque and that the accused man was a mullah who invoked the familiar defence that it had been consensual sex.

But the victim was only 10 years old. And there was more: The authorities said her family members openly planned to carry out an honour killing in the case – against the young girl. The mullah offered to marry his victim instead.

This past week, the awful matter became even worse. On Tuesday, local policemen removed the girl from the shelter that had given her refuge and returned her to her family, despite complaints from women’s activists that she was likely to be killed.

The case has broader repercussions. The head of the Women for Afghan Women shelter here where the girl took refuge, Dr. Hassina Sarwari, was at one point driven into hiding by death threats from the girl’s family and other mullahs, who sought to play down the crime by arguing the girl was much older than 10. One militia commander sent Sarwari threatening texts and an ultimatum to return the girl to her family. The doctor said she now wanted to flee Afghanistan.

After all, they're just women. Besides, what's more important: your feelings, or what someone told you a fifteen hundred year old book says?

The world is a depressing place....

And a lot of black people began viewing themselves as being inferior to white people. Thousands of years in some form or fashion in this culture -- with very little influence from the outside world -- and I wonder if some/many women don't begin feeling themselves to be the inferior of the species. That's probably what Lennon meant when he said that "woman was the nigger of the world."

That's all I can come up with. I've literally devoted my entire adult life to protecting children, especially female children, and this kind of thinking is so foreign to me that I can't even grasp the concepts. It's cultural, it's religious, it's insanity of the vilest sort.

Nearly all oppression requires the complicity of a certain number to aid in the oppression of their own.

My niece is 10. I could not imagine any member of my family ever wishing any harm on her whatsoever no matter what she did.

What on earth is wrong with these people? In some ways, I really think they are less human.

I don't give two shits if he is a mullah! If that was my daughter, he would be dead meat. I probably would be too, but at least that vile monster wouldn't be able to rape anymore kids.

At first I had planned to ask why do they not go after the men. However, I know why they do not go after the men; because their tradition tells them to go after the women. They should go after the men when they rape women. No one forces men to rape women.

so ingrained that people can't think for themselves? How does the empathy, the caring that I think most of us are born with, how do those instincts get trampled so completely? Is it lack of exposure to any other way of being? I find it impossible to comprehend. And troubling.

Marrying the 10 year old girl you raped? Killing your own daughter instead of killing the mullah who raped her? If this is broader and older than religion in this part of the world then while I feel that all people are created equal, not all cultures are equal. It troubles me that even the civil authorities, the police, are complicit. This thoroughly disgusting state of mind belongs back in prehistory, back in the stone age, back in the cave. This story sickens me

Incidentally, the rape of young boys is widespread in Afghanistan. Shortly after the war started, I recall a documentary on CNN about the practice where middle aged men from all segments of Afghan society get together to leer at young boys who are made to dance before them, wearing make-up and dressed like girls, after which the boys are forced into sex at these parties

Afghanistan's dirty little secret, by Joel Brinkley

"...Western forces fighting in southern Afghanistan had a problem. Too often, soldiers on patrol passed an older man walking hand-in-hand with a pretty young boy. Their behavior suggested he was not the boy's father. Then, British soldiers found that young Afghan men were actually trying to "touch and fondle them," military investigator AnnaMaria Cardinalli told me. "The soldiers didn't understand."

All of this was so disconcerting that the Defense Department hired Cardinalli, a social scientist, to examine this mystery. Her report, "Pashtun Sexuality," startled not even one Afghan. But Western forces were shocked - and repulsed.

For centuries, Afghan men have taken boys, roughly 9 to 15 years old, as lovers. Some research suggests that half the Pashtun tribal members in Kandahar and other southern towns are bacha baz, the term for an older man with a boy lover. Literally it means "boy player." The men like to boast about it. ..."

"sought to play down the crime by arguing the girl was much older than 10" she looked at least 11 or 12.
