Despite Grand Haven being very conservative and having the racial/ ethnic diversity of Wonder Bread ... there always seemed to be supering pockets of very "cool" and creative activity (this is a prime example of that)

I have a multi racial/ethnic family ... we were fairly "unique" to the area (my ex-husband is also Muslim) .... most of the time I felt like we were "the ethnic diversity" ... I do recall I was requested (by my ex) to muzzle my liberal trash talking mouth with most

Everything is more liberal than Holland

Metro Detroit was very segregated at that time, too. I don't think it was until the 2000s that people finally just lived where they wanted to live.

I grew up in Macomb County ... graduated in 1980 ....my entire graduating class was white.

I eventually moved back (family obligations etc) and can say, i live in an ethnically, racially mixed neighborhood and it is great!

We always went to Saugatuck for booze on Sundays. Fuck Holland ...I was born there and lived there until I was 27. I'll never go back there.

There at least 3 festivals of some sort going on every weekend, and the area features beaches galore, including Grand Haven State Park, Hoffmaster State Park, Muskegon City Park, Muskegon State Park and Muskegon County Park.

My aunt lives in Spring Lake very near Grand Haven and I grew up 60 miles to the north, near the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. I wish that I were back there right now!

I recommend the area highly for those interested in a low-key "Pure Michigan" beach vacation!

It was really nice, and I agree on "Lake Michigan Heaven."

It's always difficult to be away from the Lake during the summer!

Beloit (WI) did it before Grand Haven (along with many others):

There was the cast of NBC's "The Office":

Babar did it:

The Simpsons and Sesame Street have done it.

But the best, of course, were Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny, who really "got into it." (Thanks to Chuck Jones, who knew art very very well):

I love it when folks say they want to see more art...

That Chicago Institute is one helluva museum...I haven't been there but I sure would like to go...being so close to NYC and Boston keeps me plenty busy, tho...
