This short video captures some of the spirit behind the Friends of Trees annual planting in Portland's Vernon and Concordia neighborhoods that occurred March 24, 2012.
More than 125 volunteers showed up -- some at the crack of dawn -- to help with the event. Volunteers sorted trees, prepared tools and organized groups. Other volunteers brought baked goods and hot dishes to feed their neighbors. And some came to plant trees.
Portland's finicky Spring weather cooperated and volunteers were rewarded with plenty of sunshine. By the end of the day 245 trees were planted and many new friends were met.
Through the organization's Neighborhood Trees program, homeowners buy discounted trees to plant with their neighbors at weekend plantings. Over the years, more than 1,700 trees have been planted in the Vernon and Concordia neighborhoods, which are located in Northeast Portland.
