Gaza Conflict: Thousands Gather In London For Protest Against Israeli Military Action

Thousands of protesters have gathered in London today to call for an end to Israeli military action in Gaza and "justice and freedom" for Palestine.

Up to 15,000 people are thought to have marched through the capital from Downing Street to the Israeli embassy in Kensington after Israel launched a ground invasion of Gaza on Thursday.

This was the latest and one of the more peaceful demonstrations as rallies take place across the globe in recent days.

Sarah Colborne, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said London has "already shown its outrage at Israel's attacks on the mostly refugee population of Gaza, with people turning out in their thousands last week.

I remember the huge demonstrations all over the world against the Iraq War. CNN began to cover it, then suddenly stopped. I know because I was a moderator on a large Liberal forum at the time and we were following the worldwide opposition to the war.

Recently I asked someone if they remembered how big the demonstrations were back then and they said 'no, never saw any'.

The Corporate Media has been fully coopted and therefore not trustworthy.

In Johannesburg, numerous traffic jams occurred on Friday as thousands of pro-Palestine protesters gathered outside the Israeli Embassy trade office, waving Palestinians flags and banners criticising Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip.

However in Paris, French police banned a pro-Palestinian demonstration on Saturday after protesters last weekend tried to storm two synagogues in the capital during a similar rally, according to Agence France-Presse news agency.

President Francois Hollande, during a visit to Niger on Friday, said the march would have been a "risk to public order". "We cannot allow the conflict to be imported into France. We cannot have demonstrators [from opposite sides] facing each other down, with a risk to public order," he said.

The organisers of the march, meanwhile, said they were taking legal action to overturn the ban but that it would be defied regardless of the outcome.

In Istanbul, riot police used water cannons to stop hundreds of pro-Palestinian Turks who were staging a protest rally outside the Israeli consulate after Israel launched a ground operation in the Gaza Strip.

However, from Jakarta, Indonesia to Berlin, Germany, pro-Palestinian protesters have been staging demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians and in condemnation of Israel’s latest offensive in Gaza.

PARIS, July 19 (Reuters) - Pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with police in Paris on Saturday as they defied a ban on a planned rally against violence in the Gaza strip.

A Reuters photographer said demonstrators in northern Paris launched projectiles at riot police, who responded by firing teargas canisters and stun grenades. Demonstrators also climbed on top of a building and burned an Israeli flag.

President Francois Hollande earlier said he had asked his interior minister to ban protests that could turn violent after demonstrators marched on two synagogues in Paris last weekend and clashed with riot police.

"That's why I asked the interior minister, after an investigation, to ensure that such protests would not take place," he told journalists during a visit to Chad.

Oh, yes, things seem to have changed. Now we watch other countries doing the protesting.

Appreciate your reading my posts about education. Almost the same thing happening in countries around the world.....same people doing the hijacking of public education most likely.

I see Gove is going. Wonder if Arne Duncan is next?

but the governments are always going on about Hamas rockets and Israel's right to "defend" itself by brutalizing the civilian population and stealing their land. Harper is an embarrassment for Canada, but no more than the major opposition parties who parrot the same thing.

The only party in Canada that speaks up for the Palestinians is the Green party. And if Hamas was smart they would quit with their ineffective stupid rockets. The only ones who benefit from their firing them off is the Israelis because it grants them legitimacy for what they are doing. That's a thought, isn't it?
