Todd Akin on that "legitimate rape" thingy

About two years ago, Todd Akin, a former congressman from Missouri, used the phrase "legitimate rape" thereby revealing himself to be an absolute idiot.

Now, he's out peddling a book and explaining what he really meant by "legitimate rape." He says he was using a term that's used in law enforcement, although many law enforcement officers say they never heard of it.

However, even if that were true, it doesn't explain the rest of his original statement where he went on to explain "women's bodies have a way of shutting themselves down."

So the point here is not how stupid Akin is. It's how stupid the voters are. I fail to understand how Republicans can keep voting for total nitwits that think the earth is flat. I keep thinking that the GOP will die out from its own case of terminal dumb, yet they just keep going. And the idea that they actually have a good chance of taking over the senate this fall is mind boggling.

It was all more BS about how he meant to say 'legitimate case of rape' as opposed to 'legitimate rape', with the implication being that somewhere, in some corner of the country, law enforcement refers to allegations of rape in that way. Which also makes no sense. Because the only verbal contortion I can come up with that would even possibly having LEO's saying something like that would be to distinguish it from somebody making false rape charges. Which is so freaking rare compared to actual rapes as to be statistical noise. (And yes, before someone jumps in to tell me false reports are real, I know very well they are - I was the lead suspect in a false rape charge case in college for a while, because I was out walking at night in all black clothing in the wrong place and time, until the woman who'd reported it to police at the urging of her roommate finally admitted she'd been beaten up by her boyfriend and made up the stranger rape story because she didn't want to admit to her roommate that her boyfriend had attacked her. But it's damn RARE for such reports to be given.)

So his new excuses were just as stupid as his prior excuses. Whether he meant to say 'legitimate rape' or 'legitimate case of rape', the first half of his stupidity was just as stupid. And as you point out, the second point was just as stupid, because he was trying to shoehorn an acute incident of stress into a medical argument that ovulation can be retarded by CHRONIC stress. But if conception were to occur from a rape, the ovulation would have occurred BEFORE the rape took place, and stress hormones don't travel backwards in time.

The pundit talking to him did finally get him to weasel back into some phrasing like 'Should the child of rape be treated any less lovingly than the wanted child?' which exposed his real thinking all along - that the only thing that matters is the embryo, and the mother is merely an incubator, even for a rapist's seed.
