It appears a number of DUers here took some recent GOP bait hook line and sinker:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025244837
This is a good lesson for some folks on DU. How can we prevent getting taken for a ride by the GOP in the future?
1) Be suspicious of any MSM article that plays up divisions among Dems. The GOP is in a very weak position historically, especially when you consider their current standing among women and minorities along with the recent demographic changes in this country. The GOP cannot win elections campaigning on their unpopular policies so they will employ the divide and conquer strategy along with tactics such voter suppression.
2) Look at the author of the article. If the author is a well-known GOP hack who writes for conservative websites like the National Review Online, that's a pretty good indication that the article is not what it appears to be. A simple Google search of the author will suffice.
3) Look for actual facts and numbers. If the article provides no actual evidence, you may want to consider taking the entire thing with a grain of salt. As we saw during the 2012 election cycle, facts and numbers for the GOP are like sunlight to a vampire.
The 2014 election is getting closer by the day. The GOP will try to win by any means necessary. Just be aware that this is happening. You can be taken for a ride if you're not alert.

It was at the top of the greatest page for quite some time. A large number of DUers took the bait unfortunately. Many had no idea the article was written by a well-known conservative.
I'm trying to make sure the same mistake is not repeated.

(37,428 posts)That was unfortunate.

(90,690 posts)The GOP and the MSM do something called "framing," and they are very good at it. If I were writing that article, for instance, I would have titled it: "Warren stumps for Dem candidates; will help get Obama a Congress he can work with." Instead we have a title that instantly says the Dems are splitting apart when in fact the GOP is in a civil war with its own various factions.
See how nifty that works?
And see how many DUers were only too happy to take the opportunity to slam Obama, slam Hillary, and jump on the Warren for President bandwagon? when she still has not announced she will run, nor has Hillary announced she will run -- and what we need Right Now this Very Minute is a GOTV for 2014 or we might as well kiss 2016 goodbye.

(37,428 posts)...but the referenced story is kind of a nothing. Does seem an excuse for a dig at the president, when we consider the source.
But I do prefer Warren's message over about any other prominent Democrat's. While I hope she'll run for president someday, we need her almost as badly in the Senate--something I used to say about Clinton, too. Funny.

(83,770 posts)And if you bash Obama all the merrier, cause it's all about the rec's. Throw a Dem under the bus off to the greatest page. Show the positives of what we have accomplished so far...and the outrage in 5...4...3...2...1 and then it sinks.
The sad thing, EW is my Senator. I met her and she is awesome. Yet since she was elected I have said little about her here. Not that I have issues with her, she is doing what she does best in the Senate. She will be there to focus on the issues of the middle class and can focus on wall street. EW can do this as the Senior Senator from Mass. She is in her element and the GOP fears her and wants her to fail.
I have always questioned the rush of some to want her out of that seat. Why is that...hmmm? She can do far more damage to the GOP where she now sits. So, again I ask, why the rush to have her move on?
Hekate
(90,690 posts)Things that make you go hmmmmm. I wonder which Repub would want her seat if she's off running for president straight away?
sheshe2
(83,770 posts)I have asked it many times here and have been slammed. I have been told with a laugh...so a Senator has more power that a President??? My answer was that as a Senator she can focus on the issue of the middle class and the banks. A President can not focus in on an issue or two. They have the whole country to run and our foreign affairs.
We need EW where she is and she is indeed where she wants to be. For those that want her gone.
Just look what Teddy Kennedy did for this country as Senior Senator from Mass , may he rest in peace.
As for who wants that seat? Probably Scott Brown... he lost to her. Is now running in NH and will probably (hopefully) lose.

(31,234 posts)Obama bashing candidate X, Y, or Z comes along. Remember that hot minute when Brian Schweitzer was all the rage? Until people started digging into his actual positions on the issues, and learned that aside from his Obama bashing, he really had very little in common with liberals, or most Democrats for that matter.
The folks clamoring for an alternative don't inspire much confidence, do they? Gee, I wonder who will come along after O'Malley's fifteen minutes are up?
I keep saying that we Dems as a whole have the attention span of a gnat, and that the radical RW keeps playing the long game, which is why they've gotten as far as they have.

(31,234 posts)quinnox was famous for it. Whatever was galvanizing Dems at any given moment, was met with his equivalent of "Benghazi". The Trayvon Martin debate seemed to upset him mightily. The Christie bridge scandal...same thing. He'd start threads like, "if you're tired of hearing about x, y, or z...you can hide. Things that normally would've been important to Dems of all stripes were particularly upsetting to him and his clique. I saw that one coming from a mile away...you Better Believe It!

(2,004 posts)The ratters have been increasing in number and activity in recent weeks. The GOP must know the only shot they have to win in the fall are dirty tricks and voter suppression. The divide and conquer methods have been used for decades. How much of the riots of 1968 at the Democratic Convention were the result of that type of activity? Hubert Humphrey was a good progressive candidate who lost to Nixon. That should not have happened. Nixon was never very well liked. We see mention of Reagan Democrats a lot, but Nixon got those people first and the riots at the convention had a lot to do with it. Then, lots of progressives refused to vote for Humphrey, because he was not good enough and stayed away from the polls.

(10,597 posts)That's right. We all should know this, but maybe some younger DUers haven't learned how to scrutinize what they read. It really only takes a minute to pick it apart. Remember: you can't believe everything you see or hear. You MUST consider the source first and foremost. And I totally agree about being leery of any article that plays up a division in the Dem Party... especially in the run-up to an election. The Republican opposition research group really doesn't have much to work with. So they just blather out blatant lies, and their base believes it. "Skeptic" is my middle name.

(145,242 posts)I am not planning on taking my eye off these races and issues. I really do not care what happens in 2016 right now and want to see if we can survive 2014 and help as many people to vote as possible. The Texas voter id law is likely to be in effect for the general election (trial starts Sept 2 but even if we win, the 5th cir. will probably stay any ruling). There is a great deal to be done to help people get ids so that they can vote between now and the November election.
