FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Bobby Petrino has improved every step of the way at Arkansas not just his team's performance but his image.

The coach's revelation Thursday of an inappropriate relationship and his attempt to cover it up now threatens to derail all the progress Petrino has made in four seasons.
Arkansas is expected to return to spring practice Friday afternoon, led by a pair of Heisman Trophy hopefuls in quarterback Tyler Wilson and running back Knile Davis.
The team will do so without Petrino, who was put on administrative leave Thursday night after athletic director Jeff Long learned Petrino had failed to disclose he had been riding with a female employee half his age when his motorcycle skidded off the road over the weekend.
Petrino said he had been concerned about protecting his family and keeping an "inappropriate relationship from becoming public.

(17,111 posts)anyone would consort with the likes of Petrino. Just the thought makes me itch. Arkansas could use his picture in place of the one they use now as their mascot and it would be apt.

(13,467 posts)I guess there will be something for sports radio to talk about here in Lexington now that basketball season is over.
Petrino used to be at Louisville, he did a good job of building the program there as well, and he's done great at Ark.
Successful people sometimes seem to like to live on the edge of sabotaging themselves, then the fall over the edge.

(2,593 posts)I have no interest in his personal relationships, but it crosses the line when it involves the workplace and an employee in his department.

(27,247 posts)He wasn't even caught in a compromising position-- just giving the woman a ride on his motorcycle.

(27,247 posts)Coming from Arkansas myself, and having attended the U of A to boot, I found that that word can have several interpretations. Just doing something innocuous with a member of the opposite sex while married is often considered "inappropriate" among many residents of the state. At the same time, well, I knew someone there in Fayetteville who had what might be considered an "inappropriate" relationship with a member of the opposite sex, but the last time I checked on them, they were a happy couple. I can't say much more than that on a public discussion board.

(12,017 posts)his relationship with his family might give you a clue...but only if you take those glasses off.

(27,247 posts)but the wife, or the school administration, can still get bent out of shape about such a thing. The guy's a very visible public figure in a conservative Bible Belt state, he has to make such an announcement.

(25,556 posts)now all the other assholes who don't will say, "See, he's OK."
Lucky for him he didn't wind up a quadriplegic.
On Edit: I DESPISE these 'hotshot' coaches, which tend to include some from junior high school all the way up thru the pros...no no, I'm not saying that ALL coaches are assholes, many are real great gals and guys, but you all know who I mean: even JD Salinger couldn't help himself in Catcher In The Rye...
