CNN Breaking News email:

"A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Fukushima, Japan, the center of a nuclear crisis following a massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

The agency issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of Tohoku, a region of northern Japan."

Vibes to one and all.

So long as there is no Tsunami, of course.

Under the current circumstances, nobody can say how bad this might be, or how much worse it can get if there is another Tsunami.

It was the tsunami that screwed everything up.

I believe the design took this size of quake into account, but the engineers never took into account what might happen with an ensuing tsunami after such a quake.

Edited to add. The Designs took into account potential structural issues after a quake of this size and incorporated shutdown procedures. In 2011, the shutdown procedures were moving along fine, then the tsunami hit and nothing was going to stop the massive failure that happened afterwards.

In this quake, the damage is already there and even without a tsunami, the consequences could again be disastrous. Should there be another tsunami, I expect a worse disaster than 2011.

A 20-centimeter (8-inche) tsunami reached the coast of Ishinomaki Ayukawa about 50 minutes after the quake. Smaller waves were observed at two other locations along the coast.

Changes to the shoreline, however, were not visible on television footages of NHK public broadcaster.
