(29,414 posts)I'll really screw up my sleep patterns! Luckily, I'm done with driving for the day. I just hope I didn't scare any of the drivers around me as I bounced (with air!) over all the rollercoaster bumps and holes on Houston's roads

(29,414 posts)I had to take my car in for maintenance, and to fix part of the brake pedal that turns the brake lights off. Next time, in about three months or so, will be the bigger maintenance to replace/check all fluids and filters.
I have a lot of appreciation for the guys on Top Gear as they often do these extra-long road trips on next to no sleep, and manage not to kill themselves or anyone else

(21,925 posts)I'd like to hear from the Supreme Court on the issue of Centaur personhood. With the fictional personhood of corporations already recognized, who knows?
kentauros
(29,414 posts)Seems like that designation could make them "people."
Plus, beings such as mermaids, sphynxes, centaurs, satyrs, fauns, selkies, sirens, and all the others I can't remember, are whole beings, not half human and half whatever animal their bodies seem to include. Yet, they can interact with whole humans due to having some of their whole bodies in human form.
In other words, most people don't say "She's half human and half fish," instead saying, simply, "She's a mermaid." Yet, people continue to say "half human, half horse" or "half goat" when referencing other similar whole beings.
It's discrimination!

I'm afraid I don't know much about Demeter. I do like mythology, but I'm no expert (much less, possessing an expert's memory.)
Of course, if you're alluding to people posting here, well, my brain/mind is a bit mushy right now. Not enough Hypnos in my day/night
Hekate
(90,771 posts)Goddesses are often found in trinities, even when they are closely paired with a god in one of their aspects.
When I joined DU in 2002 I had just finished my dissertation in mythological studies, and a lot of my study prior to that was on the Demeter/Persephone myth and modern women's reaction to it. In choosing my name here I decided to move on, because my children certainly had moved on and out. I don't know the other posters personally (and don't necessarily always agree with them) but I do notice their names when they pop up.
How did you decide on Kentauros, if I may ask?
kentauros
(29,414 posts)And thanks for the explanation
Have you ever heard of Layne Redmond? She was a master at the frame drum, and wrote a book titled "When the Drummers Were Women." She even put out a CD of her music where she discovered that Greek women were not only the drummers but also the bee-keepers. The book's out of print, so I've never gotten to read it, just Layne's blog posts about it, or the liner notes.
I picked "Kentauros" because it's the furthest back root word for "centaur," a form that is a love of mine. There's a deeper reason that I'd rather not mention in the open on DU because of the ultra-high mockability factor
Hekate
(90,771 posts)As for explaining one's name -- you've said all that is necessary.
Thanks for the clip.
I'm sure I saw a Persephone here once.... hmmm

Ulysses Everett McGill: Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?
Pete: The Preacher said it absolved us.
Ulysses Everett McGill: For him, not for the law. I'm surprised at you, Pete, I gave you credit for more brains than Delmar.
Delmar O'Donnell: But they was witnesses that seen us redeemed.
Ulysses Everett McGill: That's not the issue Delmar. Even if that did put you square with the Lord, the State of Mississippi's a little more hard-nosed.
(laughs)
Ulysses Everett McGill: Baptism! You two are just dumber than a bag of hammers!

I did love O Brother Where Art Thou. We watched it in our Greek epic class as a modern telling of the Odyssey. (watch it again, it's all in there)

BainsBane
(53,052 posts)lamentations of the women? I just remember being on a jury for Fred M and then seeing Rug's thread in appreciation of him, just as Fred was being shown the door after a short two days. I figured he was DU's own mythological creature?
pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)We had lamentations coming out the wazoo!

(29,414 posts)I'm more into Greek myths, but you can post whichever kind you like here. Some folks like the northern myths (Vikings, dragons), and others the "fictional" myths (Cthulu, Old Ones.) I'm most interested in those along the Mediterranean, including Persian and Assyrian
