Avoiding the tombstone for 13 years!
7 years to blame it on Bush.. while he was still in office (in fact, more Bush years than Obama years while on DU!)
Predating Facebook by 5 years!
Untold amounts of data collected by the NSA about us!

(2,899 posts)I think the secret to being here for so long is either not posting often or being totally none controversial.

(3,001 posts)I'm surprised I'm not banned. Maybe it's because I donated a long time ago? This place just brings our a serious case of devils advocacy in me.

(111,110 posts)But did not sign on until March 2001....
I guess I have made a few friends and enemies along the way?
We were fighting to save our country after the election of 2000 was stolen. We did not want and did not need any more conservative talking points. We had had enough.
(on edit: I had originally contributed under my real name after an unsuccessful run for Congress)
Chico Man
(3,001 posts)Impressive. How did you become aware of the site so early on?
kentuck
(111,110 posts)and checked it out. When she told me that DU needed some writers, I started writing editorials (or posts) around the end of March and first of April of 2001 under my real name. Later, I decided to write anonymously as "kentuck". I have taken hiatuses 3 or 4 times. It just got to heavy to carry. And the site has gone thru several changes, maybe not all for the best, but has continued to be an open forum for progressive thinkers for a long time.

(8,028 posts)I read it as the number '2'fers.
I'll confess, I'm a bit of a 2fer. I just don't discuss it anymore.
2fers are so 'last decade.' I'm busy trying to figure out if the 'troll bridge' thread is ever going to get legs...

(37,573 posts)but with less than 3,000 posts, you have not been that active of a member. Do you even have any purple hearts or skin grafts from any of the thousands of flame wars of GD? Did you duke it out with Carlos, Mr. Benchley or OMC? Or even NSMA?
Hard to believe I have been here for almost ten years.
Must be because they keep running out of the anchovies I request for my tombstone.

(37,573 posts)there are at least 40
Although there were what, 10,000 registrations in the first year? Or 5,000?
Some long timers got the axe. Was Carlos "one of us"? Or Mr. Benchley?
Not sure if either of them joined in 2001, and of course, I did not join then either.
I remember in 2006 searching archives and would read a post and think "what a great post, wonder what happened to that person" and would find them tombstoned.
Usually though, when I tried to discover why somebody I thought was a great DUer was tombstoned, I would find a good solid reason for it. That, for one reason or other, they lost it and crossed the line. But some of them did come back under different names.

(84,711 posts)My handle is the name of my Siamese cat who loved to sit on lap in front of computer. I was new to the internet and didn't think of a clever name. I was joked about for long time in the early days on DU for being mistaken for KoKo the "signing" gorilla or being a troll who signed up as a signing gorilla to post nonsense. Also, I made the mistake of not going to the "DU Lounge" to introduce properly introduce myself. That was a big "no..no." That was probably part of the "KoKo" problem in those early days.

Have dialed back the comments a bit the last year or two. Feels better to argue with right-wingers on a site with a different range of opinion than against people who really should be your allies on the most important issues.

(4,906 posts)Once awake, its impossible to go back to sleep. I still read everyday but I have little patience with cheerleaders and willful ignorance..so I post less and recognize that both democrats and republicans are bought and paid for with very few exceptions. I am deeply appreciative of those duers who keep justice and truth at the front. I would have left long ago but then someone like Koko, Marmar, DeSwiss, Willy T, Catherina and MANY others posts something that knocks me out and I stay. I have huge appreciation for your fortitude and am inspired always to be and do more than I ever thought possible.

(37,364 posts)Get frustrated sometimes and have watched good people come and go. My take is the same on both Bush and the NSA--to hell with the lot. Not frightened of either and firmly hold that no one on earth can force you to change the ideas that you hold. Only you can do that, which is I why I find the browbeating so tedious.
PS. Have never changed my user name either in any iteration of DU.

(31,893 posts)I found my way here sometime in the spring of 2001, via a link to "Top Ten Conservative Idiots" someone posted in an obscure discussion group I used to frequent. I registered a couple months later, but I don't remember exactly when.
I had one post deleted in DU1, for calling Carlos Jiacinto an asshole and telling him to fuck off.
I've survived all these years by being more careful ever since.

(13,992 posts)This is my third handle on DU (long story), but I found here the detailed account of the Dubya Inaugural Parade (complete with trash being hurled at the motorcade). I believe Skinner wrote it himself. I've been here ever since.
