somehow convinced 50 states to put his name on the ballot.

I forget who did run for the Dems in '72.

I don't think there is any evidence that a person as progressive as McGovern can win a general election and I think 1972 proves it. That might be Warren's point, but I'm guessing.

in choosing a VP he might have made it a closer race than it turned out to be. After "The Eagleton Affair" people's perceptions of McGovern changed--for the worse.

I couldn't stomach Nixon and McGovern was too liberal for me. I've grown. A lot.

and got their assed kicked by Carter in one of the biggest landslides in American history. I do get your point. If something didn't work once - don't EVER try again - even 44 years later. The right-wing Republicans were so stupid they tried again only 16 years later and went down in a crashing blaze when they would have easily won if they had nominated John Anderson.
