The primaries do sometimes seriously change what might happen in the generals.

(16,846 posts)Gravel had a kind of cult appeal about him, so he might have gotten the votes of people who don't normally vote. McCain had the POW thing going for him, though, so a certain amount of the population would have voted for him regardless. I think that most people were fed up with Republicans at that point, so the Democrats could have run just about anyone and he would have had a chance. After all, they ran a black man whose middle name was "Hussein," and he still won in a landslide.
