Whatever it takes one to get through HELL, I'm all for it. Those who haven't been, good for them, I won't tell them what to think or how to live.

Part of her life story is in what may or may not be the most accurate version of the famous 'Aint I A Woman?' speech delivered at the Women's Convention in Akron, Ohio, on May 29, 1851.


Marius Robinson, who attended the convention and worked with Truth, recorded his version of the speech in the June 21, 1851, issue of the Anti-Slavery Bugle:[7]

One of the most unique and interesting speeches of the convention was made by Sojourner Truth, an emancipated slave. It is impossible to transfer it to paper, or convey any adequate idea of the effect it produced upon the audience. Those only can appreciate it who saw her powerful form, her whole-souled, earnest gesture, and listened to her strong and truthful tones.

She came forward to the platform and addressing the President said with great simplicity: "May I say a few words?" Receiving an affirmative answer, she proceeded:

I want to say a few words about this matter. I am a woman's rights. I have as much muscle as any man, and can do as much work as any man. I have plowed and reaped and husked and chopped and mowed, and can any man do more than that?

I have heard much about the sexes being equal. I can carry as much as any man, and can eat as much too, if I can get it. I am as strong as any man that is now.

As for intellect, all I can say is, if a woman have a pint, and a man a quart – why can't she have her little pint full? You need not be afraid to give us our rights for fear we will take too much, – for we can't take more than our pint'll hold.

The poor men seems to be all in confusion, and don't know what to do. Why children, if you have woman's rights, give it to her and you will feel better. You will have your own rights, and they won't be so much trouble.

I can't read, but I can hear. I have heard the bible and have learned that Eve caused man to sin. Well, if woman upset the world, do give her a chance to set it right side up again.

The Lady has spoken about Jesus, how he never spurned woman from him, and she was right. When Lazarus died, Mary and Martha came to him with faith and love and besought him to raise their brother. And Jesus wept and Lazarus came forth. And how came Jesus into the world?

Through God who created him and the woman who bore him. Man, where was your part?

But the women are coming up blessed be God and a few of the men are coming up with them. But man is in a tight place, the poor slave is on him, woman is coming on him, he is surely between a hawk and a buzzard.

Yes, I have read what Sojourner Truth said. And yes it makes me cry to read again. Such a strong and brave woman.

Yes we are still coming up and yes we keep getting pushed back. Days I feel it will never end. Yet I really truly believe that we are being heard, softly. I believe that our voices are rising I believe that people are hearing.I believe.

for me". I'm not fond of drama queen antics. I am partial to thoughtful. No snark, but I don't find much of that in your op.

I suspect your idea of a strong woman diverges from mine on several critical points. I am deeply suspicious of sloganeering and cliche use.

I don't see what you posted as illuminating. I'm sorry but I don't.

and btw, my friends, including the many adults I spent time with as children, would laugh at your claim about me. that's the last thing they'd say about me. Need a ride? I'm there. Need someone to talk to? someone to help out? glad to do it. I rarely say no.

Strong women come in as many shapes and sizes as women do. They share some common attributes. They are gutsy without being self-righteous. They don't do false bravado. They don't hold fast and tight to preconceptions and are willing to let new ideas illuminate their minds. Strong women think for themselves. They maintain a sense of perspective and a sense of humor. Strong women look beyond the surface. They are willing to examine their beliefs. They don't go along with the crowd for the sake of expedience or because it's easier. Strong women grow and develop throughout their lives.

That's some of what I believe. I still have no clue as to what you believe constitutes a strong woman.

And without being mean spirited, the phrase is "bated breath".

"you have a remarkably resilient spirit". This friend is someone frequently quoted in certain "touchy feelie circles, though that's not his fault. In any case, there are few people whose opinion I value as highly, so yes, I think I'm a strong person and a strong woman.

here's what I can't resist: You started the nastiness. My initial post simply inquired "In your own words, what is a strong woman"? I asked, sheshe, because I was curious. You responded.... nastily. I then responded that sloganeering and cliches aren't of value to me. And they aren't illuminating. I prefer someone expressing things in their own words.

I have. You have not.

I have a BA in fine art. I have always expressed myself in pictures, in art. I don't think how a person expresses themselves is either black or white.

There is no right or wrong way to show expression.

Dakara, I will not be so presumptuous as to offer a definition of a strong woman here, I lack certain qualifications.

One to one. As a single male to every single individual woman, I ask.
Do you feel strong? If so I'll support you and count on your support for myself.
If not, what help do you need? I will do my part large or small. But, I cannot make you strong; you must do that.
If I am in your way, just tell me. I was raised to help those I perceive as weaker than myself. In my zeal to act as taught, I may not realize me being in front isn't shielding, but obstructing. Point that out and I will move.
If you are stronger than I, can I count on your support? Sometimes I need it.
