And does the practice and application of your "sincerely held belief" extend to interfering with your neighbor's life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness?
As a life long Liberal, I have many "sincerely held beliefs" that serve to guide me in my life, but with the obvious exceptions of sincerely believing that violence, discrimination, racism, sexism, and the like are intolerable to society, I can't think of anything I "sincerely believe" that infringes on the right to pursue a happy, safe, and fulfilling life for another person.

My sincerely held beliefs are rooted in my faith. I don't expect my beliefs to interfere with others' beliefs, though.

(19,373 posts)How exactly did the Felonious Five make that determination? Is there a legal definition for what constitutes a "sincerely held belief"? Did the Green family provide affidavits to that effect? Because if they did, they committed perjury.

(20,600 posts)give you the license to do right wing garbage like spying on citizens in the name of "National Security", or conduct drone attacks that kill innocent women and children as "collateral damage" , its really disgusting to see the excuses and cheer-leading when it comes to right wing garbage like this.

(10,558 posts)I have seen and even grown buds that turn purple and long ago there was one that would be maroon in color when overly mature but never have I seen anything blue like that. Cool link bookmarked to my faves thanks.

(10,558 posts)The true meaning of life (from my frame of reference) is in the collection of all the experiences that come with the living of each life. In this particular belief, there are no good or bad choices. How you choose to impose or not impose your beliefs on me, how I react, are shared experiences. Trust me when I tell you that my particular odd 'belief' changes nothing as to how I react to my 'experiences'. I accept the necessity for religion but that changes nothing as to how I deal with a couple of overly insistent Latter Day Saints who smugly look at me like I am some kind of idiot when I politely inform them that I am not interested in what they are selling.

(19,373 posts)I used to work for a company that was owned by, and primarily staffed with Mormons. Lot's of unflattering stories, and I'll just leave it at that. But I also worked for a Mormon when I was in HS detailing used cars. He drank, bet on horses, and was the salt of the earth. Always two sides to every coin.
Thanks for sharing your reincarnation views. My long passed mom held that view, and while it doesn't completely resonate with me, I do not discount it entirely.

(10,558 posts)... the two I worked for were the hardest workers I have ever worked with. If I were an employer seeking employees, based on my own experience, seeing 'Mormon' on their application would be definite plus!

At the state level, my sincerely held beliefs require a refund on the taxes I've had to pay for the infernal Vikings stadium. In fact, I want refunds on all the #&*@* stadiums I've had to pay for.

(53,032 posts)I am politically pro-choide but on a personal level, I am actually pro-life. I oppose abortion AND invitro-fertilization as a matter on my own personal sense of morality. I believe only God/nature has the right to take or create a life. I know it sounds old fashioned, but that's my belief. However, I don't believe the law should reflect my personal beliefs and I don't wish to legislate my own sense of morality. I am strongly pro-choice (which is not the same as pro-abortion, despite what our friends on the right believe). Only a woman herself can make her own medical choices, and I refuse to substitute my own personal morality for the choices of others. When my brother's wife got fertility treatments in order to have their son, I didn't feel compelled to pronounce my own feelings on the subject. I filed that under none of my fucking business, as in not my body and not my choice. The same is true for people I have known who have had abortions. I never felt compelled to project my own views on them because it wasn't my life.
If I don't impose my moral beliefs on those closest to me, why should companies impose theirs on their employees?
bluesbassman

(32,704 posts)Cops' guns included. Look at the news. Gun violence will only get worse going forward. Yes, it will be messy during the first 5 years or so, but it's worth it. At some point, all the criminals will be caught and their guns confiscated. Mexico and Canada will have to do the same for logistical reasons. Does that infringe upon my neighbor's life? Not really, but they'll probably think so for a few years until the day we wake up without any gun deaths.

(19,835 posts)I believe in the soul. The cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.
