Warren Brings Populism Down South. Is Hillary Paying Attention?

Remember, were talking about Rand Paul country here. Some smart people have clearly concluded that progressive economic populism is a winning strategy in the South.
Intentionally or not, Warrens invitation sends a message. A Southern campaign asked a Massachusetts progressive (and a Harvard professor, no less!) to campaign for it in a close-fought race with one of the countrys leading conservatives.

A veteran South Carolina politician found that unsurprising, saying of Warren: She is against the corporate monoliths that the average blue-collar Southern [finds] anathema.
The Grimes campaign knows what its doing. Despite having been dismissed as being too young and too liberal to pose a serious threat to the powerful and well-known incumbent, Grimes has pulled close to McConnell in most polling. (Some polls even show her in the lead.)
Grimes has assembled a talented and high-priced team of consultants, including top Democratic pollster Mark Mellman. We can be sure the decision to invite Warren wasnt made lightly, but was the product of careful research and polling. The Grimes team clearly concluded that Warrens brand of anti-Wall Street, pro-Main Street populism was a winning message.

(3,709 posts)Kentucky is more mid-west than southern. Having grown up in the deep South, and now living in Kentucky, this is not a southern state, but they sure want to be.
As for Rand Paul Country... unfortunately, he aligns himself just enough with the Kentucky Tea Baggers that they believe he's one of theirs. But Rand Paul is only about Rand Paul.... and he's dangerous.
I went to one of the events Warren made with Grimes... she was wonderful and I am pleasantly surprised that Grimes was as well. Articulate, with a great message... but regardless of her standing in the polls, this will be an uphill climb to ditch Mitch. But we are trying.
It would be wonderful if the areas of the country, so suppressed by the ultra-right wing message (which includes more than the South), begins to see the light. Warren may be the person to deliver that message because she speaks the truth in a manner that reaches everyone.
Hope so...
Rand Paul scares me...

(1,301 posts)And shame on those who would write off the whole South as "unwinnable". There are already a LOT of Democratic voters here; with a real 50-state strategy and a strong message of economic populism, the Democrats ought to be able to put the whole South in play again.
All it takes is a little courage.
