After the Supreme Court decided to take up the Hobby Lobby case late last year, Santorum argued that excluding birth control from womens health insurance plans was a First Amendment right for corporations.
I mean, the idea that the First Amendment stops after you walk out of church, that it doesnt have anything to do with how you live the rest of your life, I dont know very many people of faith that believes that their religion ends with just worship, he told CNN. I dont think thats what the First Amendment stands for. And I dont think thats what the court will say.
During his 2012 campaign for president, the Catholic candidate vowed to repeal President Barack Obamas health care reform law, and all access to birth control along with it.

VATICAN CITY -- Real religious liberty includes the freedom to live according to the values taught by one's faith, Pope Francis said.
"Religious freedom is not just a matter of thought or private devotion," the pope said June 20. "It is the freedom to live -- both privately and publicly -- according to the ethical principles that are a consequence of the truth found."

(19,964 posts)That's basically just a paraphrase of Francis' remarks. Be that as it may, however one might interpret Francis' remarks on religious liberty, they are indeed being used by conservative Christians (including the USCCB) to justify their scores of lawsuits against reproductive rights and for discrimination against LGBTs.
