Planning to impeach President Obama if they win the Senate in November. What exactly do they think he has done that would rise to that level? Are they aware anything they'd want to impeach President Obama for, was actually started by the Bush Administration?

(284 posts)I think the Republicans are aiming for this:
From Article 2, Section 1 of the Nixon impeachment:
Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has repeatedly engaged in conduct violating the constitutional rights of citizens, impairing the due and proper administration of justice and the conduct of lawful inquiries, or contravening the laws governing agencies of the executive branch and the purposed of these agencies.
This conduct has included one or more of the following:
He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be intitiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.
In regards to the targeting of Tea Party groups by the IRS. They're going to try to pin it as high up the Administration chain as they can.

(6,913 posts)That's assuming anybody at the IRS did something bad to begin with, which is also disputed.
"confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law"
This is where their argument is woefully inadequate. Their tax returns were not used. Also, their actions were absolutely lawful. The letter of the actual law states they are NOT to use the money for any political purpose.

(28,394 posts)If they weren't just blowing smoke, the House could impeach him now. "Impeach" just means to bring charges, which is the role of the HR. The Senate has to try the president on the charges.
The usual charge is "high crimes and misdemeanors"-- which would be defined in the charges. They can pretty much interpret that as they wish.
Don't worry, it won't happen. It's just noise.
