Arizona Legislators Trying To Declare Pregnancy Two Weeks Prior To Conception

Legislators have had so much success smuggling in ulterior motives with 20-week bans that theyre now looking for ways to expand the amount of hard right anti-choice nonsense they can attach to those bills. The most recent---and extreme---example is Arizona. There, lawmakers are writing a 20-week abortion ban that starts counting off at the first day of a womans period. Yes, theyre arguing that youre pregnant while youre actually getting your period. In fact, as Kate Sheppard at Mother Jones explains, theyre really trying to steal as many weeks as possible away from women seeking abortion:

Thats bad in and of itself, but taking a step back and looking at the big picture makes this law look even more sinister. Medically speaking, pregnancy starts when a fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining. Anti-choicers have attempted to define it earlier with their failed attempts to pass personhood law that would define not just pregnancy, but personhood as beginning at conception. Now in Arizona, theyre trying to argue that youre pregnant a couple of weeks before you even had the sex that resulted in your pregnancy.
Think about the implications down the road. If a woman is pregnant two weeks before she becomes pregnant, than any fertile woman---including those currently menstruating!---should really be considered pregnant. After all, we dont know the future. We dont know that any non-pregnant woman couldnt be pregnant two weeks from now, making her retroactively pregnant now. Considering that its anti-choice nuts were talking about, its safe to assume that theyd simply prefer a situation where all women of reproductive age are considered to be pregnant, on the grounds that they could be two weeks from now. Better safe than sorry, especially if that mentality means you get to exert maximum control over the bodies of women of reproductive age.

(40,656 posts)Thank you, Arizona. I'm glad it isn't us anymore. I thought no place could be as weird as Alaska with Palin but this is mental. This is psychotic. Absolutely certifiable.

Sick, sick assholes, every one.

(31,011 posts)Doctors will use LMP (last menstrual period) to get an idea of due date and determine gestational age. This is not always accurate and is somewhat misleading.
Again, it's proof that the repukes are attempting to insert themselves in the exam room between a patient and her doctor.

(15,661 posts)I mean, seriously, even obstetrician's are only making educated guesses. Perhaps we should insert two windows over each ovary whenever a baby girl is born. Then the whole world can watch what's going on inside her body throughout her entire life.

(417 posts)do not understand the bills they are passing. Every time they are called out on it they realize how stupid they are and back off some.
Lets hope they get embarrassed and eviscerated again and back the fuck off!!

(6,810 posts)While I have my own views on abortions, they are my own and my having a penis pretty much makes them irrelevant. But this shit right here is just bonkers. Why not just cut to the chase and say any female carrying any eggs in her ovaries is legally pregnant despite not being medically pregnant. Hell, baby girls have eggs in their ovaries when they're born (somewhere in the order of 1-2 million), so they'd be legally pregnant too. Enough of the halfsies, let your freak flag fly. I want to see a genocide charge leveled against a 2-year-old.

(115,768 posts)Will they pass statutes that prosecute women for not getting pregnant when they could have? Will this be retroactive? Am I in trouble because even though I'm too old to get pregnant now, there were hundreds of times I could have but didn't?
These fuckers are crazy, and not in a good way.
