None life threatening injures and family jewels unscathed so no Darwin Award issued.
And no word on how this will effect pistol man's mating potential.

The pistol was apparently in his front shirt pocket? Is this a common place to carry a gun? So when one bends over it is in danger of falling out?
Maybe preferable to tucking it in your waistband so that if it fires it shoots your balls off?

(549 posts)It's time to ban all guns and repeal the second amendment.
Hunters can use a bow and arrow. Exceptions can be made for those with disabilities and allow them to use a crossbow.

But yes, a mature society would look at what is happening and get rid of guns, period, no discussion, end of story
an IMMATURE society would whine about the fun they will miss out on if someone takes their guns

(33,956 posts)However, why can't we enact legislation that upholds the spirit of the 2A?
1. All guns must be registered
2. If an unregistered gun is found in someone's possession, mandatory jail time
3. Each person who owns a gun must submit to going through a mandatory state course on gun safety and have a psychiatric examination before getting a permit. If they choose to carry their gun around, then they must file a surety bond with the state to ensure that their victims are reimbursed for their damages.
4. Each person who has gone through course may have ONE legal gun in his/her issue. Second gun costs $100 and all subsequent registered guns to the same person will be $1000 each to offset training and courses.
5. The registered owner of the gun is 100% responsible for that gun. No ifs, ands or buts. No more "accidental" shootings. Your gun kills someone? Mandatory jail time for involuntary manslaughter.
Yeah. Welcome to my "no tolerance" zone.

(35,699 posts)With proper training, a crossbow is arguably one of the safest ways to hunt deer because of the accuracy and limited range.

Canada.
Which country has more killings?
If this "Ban all gunz" stupidity becomes official, yes, only criminals will have them.
You just don't like the fact they make noise.

(1,557 posts)How is it these guns just go off? Are they faulty? Are they cheap knock-offs, ie Glicks instead of Glocks? Do they lack external safeties? Maybe you're right about it being anger management issues on the part of these pistols. "You looking at me?" Bam!

(35,699 posts)But instead, he accidentally fired the .40-caliber handgun in his pocket.
As is the case with 99% of the "gun goes off" incidents I would guess.
There is a some controversy about whether a modern gun will discharge when dropped but at the least it appears to be a rare event. The consensus seems to be that for a modern handgun to discharge the trigger has to be pulled. With long guns the situation may be a little different.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accidental_discharge
So Walmart man apparently pulled the trigger and thus the pistol did not just "go off" on its own. Reporters should be more careful and say something like "Man in Walmart check out line accidentally discharges pistol." Of course that would require something resembling actual journalism rather than just dashing something off to meet a deadline.

(11,916 posts)That should be against the law as well, just like taking various body parts out and playing with them in public is against the law.
Same rules apply:
1) Don't take it out unless you intend to use it.
2) If you play with it too much, it'll go off, and could have unintended consequences
