My friend died despite having the best broccoli available

But here is the thing. After she died...her husband was able to move on with taking care of the kids and basically life...without being bankrupted because of inadequate broccoli.

and glad your friend's family was able to move on because they had the best broccoli.

It is sad that often the same cannot be said for those who can only afford to buy the stems and pieces. Unfortunately, inadequate broccoli is much more common than the really good stuff now - and will continue to be in the future. The only thing that will change is that more people will have access to that inadequate product.

I guess if you look at it from the 'half a loaf is better than none' perspective, that makes those stems and pieces good enough.

stuff that's too expensive to eat, it sounds like broccoli isn't such a great choice.

Maybe we should consider peas, instead? Cheap to grow and maintain, and if everyone contributed just a small number of pods, we'd have plenty of peas to go around.
