That's all they have left, they have no moral ground upon which to lead this nation.

what values Barack Obama REALLY doesn't believe in.

Those are human values, but as someone once said about politicians in general: "don't tell me what you're for; show me your budget."

Of course, Biden's been known to pinch a line or two.

I also have the values that we are all created equal and that each of us is entitled to our privacy. Unfortunately, the Obama administration seems to think that the government can deprive us of our privacy and grant some the right to trial and others not.

We can't have a nice thread about Obama without a naysayer, can we? Somebody always has to jump in with the negativity. While what you say may be true, it doesn't and shouldn't take away from the OP's post.

like you, is merely trolling for attention when he knows full well that the OP was not about Obama's particular policies but about a philosophy. I believe, in spirit, that Obama tries to remain true to that philosophy, even if his policies sometimes don't reflect it.

But I'm smart enough to know that I'm never going to be 100% pleased by any president, and also smart enough not to troll a "feel good" thread with my cynicism, no matter how unhappy I may personally be or how negative I may feel.

Perhaps you should be, too.

Just blind, "feel good" adulation and insults for those who question it.

Welcome to the new DU.

The lack of substance in this one, particular post wouldn't necessarily be a problem if there were substance behind the adulation in other places on this board... but I am having trouble finding evidence of that anywhere here. It's pretty striking that, during an election year, you can look down this entire board and not see a single post talking about recent achievements on behalf of the people, or plans for policies that will help reverse the movement of this country toward corporate authoritarianism. Not one.

By contrast, we have seen all kinds of news over the past month of policies on behalf of corporations, the MIC, and the police state. We have received a steady stream of news about settlements for corrupt banks, new spy centers to gather email and phone records of Americans, "reluctant" signing of legislation for detention indefinitely without trial, claiming of the right to assassinate American citizens, plans to speed pipeline construction, and exclamations from Obama's Secretary of Defense that the war budget must be spared.

It is not out of line, therefore, when we are given yet another "feel good" post with vague, pretty words, or bright flags, or gushing over the President's proficiency in sign language, to ask what he is offering, policy-wise, that is inspiring these soaring posts. If questions along those lines elicit hostility rather than an actual response, this board begins to look like any vapid Republican flag-waving event, and that should concern all of us.

Democrats want Democratic policies. We have lately had an overdose of the corporate and the neocon with regard to policy. Especially during an election year, it is fair to ask for substance behind the soaring words.

Look, I'm an old man. I've been through it all. I've seen decades of this shit come and go and it always goes in cycles. And there are always those who scream "Oh my god, the world is coming to an end!" at every single opportunity, without taking a moment to appreciate the fact that, despite all the shit, there are actually some GOOD things that happen and sometimes it's just nice to, you know, ENJOY the moment.

But no, people like you and your buddy above have to squat over anything that looks remotely upbeat and take a giant "woe is me" shit on it.

Go take your shit somewhere else. There's plenty of opportunity for your hand-wringing on DU.

to make sure that Americans would be tried in American courts by American juries under the very specific rules set forth in our Constitution.

We fought, in part, to protect the rights of American citizens on the high seas. Americans have rights no matter where they are. They also have responsibilities. So, the solution to Alwalaki was to take him alive. We have the military power to do that. Why didn't we?
