Forth-six-year-old Annette Clincy of Jackson is in the Hinds County Jail after a grocery store dispute spilled into the parking lot. Police say she got a gun and fired at the woman she was having a disagreement with.
It happened Sunday in the parking lot of the Grocery Depot. Chief Don Byington says two women got into an argument over the number of items in a shopping cart going through a line where the number of items was limited.
He said the management of the store ordered both women to leave the store.
"We had an incident yesterday where two ladies were in the line, at the corner market which is located on Northside Drive" said Chief Byington. (They) Had some kind of verbal altercation, escalated. Management asked both individuals to leave the store. One of the individuals approached her vehicle, she retrieved a .25 caliber pistol, and shot in the direction of the victim as she was leaving the store. "
Fortunately, nobody was hit by the gunfire and nobody was hurt. Police arrived quickly and charged 46 year old Annette Clincy of Jackson with aggravated assault with a firearm, and shooting a firearm at a motor vehicle. She is being held on a $175,000 bond.

(17,162 posts)Firing a shot over the item limit in a grocery store???
People are going crazy- no longer any doubt in my mind
which might explain my reluctance to leave my "cave."
WHEN I do leave the "cave" I find myself in hyper-vigilance mode.
I watch everything and and every one in my immediate proximity
for signs of disturbance and insanity.
I think I need a road trip to the middle of nowhere to reset my brain.
I find myself in a perpetual state of fight or flight modality every
time I venture out..not good, not good at all.

(17,162 posts)I don't carry a weapon, for your record.
I am well aware that many others do, thus my tendency to stay
out of public places where insanity is prevalent.
You are obviously not paying attention if you find my fear unfounded.

(4,444 posts)plane crashes and cute dogs. But, I also know that the rate of violent crime has been going down. The chances of being murdered are 1 in 22450. The chances of being murdered by gun are even less. Gun murders make up 67% of all murders. 43% of murders were unknown to the killer in 2009 so...
I may be way off in my numbers because I've never been a math guy so :

do the math. you're being unreasonable. and you being unreasonable might cause someone else to be unreasonable. fear is contagious and may be a cause of some of these incidents.

When is the last time you spent any time in LA?
It's getting really close to "Mad Max" syndrome out here.
People are PISSED and AGGRESSIVE in my neck of the woods.
Driving on the freeway is literally like a violent video game these days.
Would love to be where you live-

(60,010 posts)I totally get what you mean, in that case.
I lived in SF Bay area for 6 years, until 2005, and was overwhelmed by the seething anger, rudeness, not to mention the aggressive driving, red light running, and over crowding.
The first thing that came to mind was the famous "croweded rat" expereiment.
Where I live now, a traffic jam is if I can see another car on the road when I drive to the store.
Bliss.

(2,983 posts)I would say it depends on certain circumstances. The neighborhood you live in, your available resources and security, your physical appearance (to an extent). For example, I wouldn't want to be a small person living in dangerous neighborhood in an apartment without a state of the art security system. Even then, I wouldn't want to live there given a choice. Plenty of people have no choice as to where they live.
The rate of recorded, reported violent crime may be going down, this does not mean that violent crime is dropping to the statistics as indicated because quite a lot of it goes unreported. You could, theoretically, use statistics to support any number of assertions. There's a lot however, that (especially in this case) these statistics do not account for. Now I don't have a crystal ball, but I think we all know that a lot of fights, rapes and even murders in this Country go unnoticed, undetected. So technically the chances of being murdered are probably somewhat higher than the statistics suggest.
That doesn't mean I'll lock myself in my room all day, but it's enough reason to be cautious and I wouldn't blame someone for being scared, especially living in a vastly populated City known for violent crime.
I do not think that a fear of being attacked makes it more likely that you'll be attacked (not the fear in itself). No more than a fear of fire makes it more likely that you'll be burned (indeed, it is wise to have some fear of fire). Fear can indeed be contagious, but this is only when it is known, expressed in some way. Being afraid to go out in public is hardly an early warning sign of someone freaking out - it may be a sign of anxiety, but that is all too common in this age and certainly not something to suggest danger. To tell someone that being afraid of a violent attack will make a violent attack more likely is likely to increase their fear. Fear is indeed contagious.
That being said, to suggest that someone being afraid of violence may cause violence is rather absurd. Any sane person would be at least nervous about the idea of being violently attacked. Any reasonable person knows also that this is always a possibility.
Your suggestions that the poster is potentially inciting violence by being afraid are unreasonable.

(78,249 posts)nervously fidgeting because my chances of making the next light rail train were sinking with every passing minute, because the g-dd-mn store had only two of four registers open.
Then this dirtbag starts in on me: "Are you in a rush? Go ahead of me!" I stepped back. He proceeded to usher people ahead of me (!) and chew me out for the foul language (what would you say if some strange nutjob accosted you in a grocery line?)
Finally I get up to a freshly opened third checkout. The train is, of course, long gone. And the dirtball is venting to his cashier about it! "Is that the guy over there?"
Good thing this isn't a SYG state, and that people like him aren't generally armed.
