I remember on one of my first days as a page at the Ohio State House...

It was more than 30 years ago now.

My "friend" had one of those pot jugs you can buy that allowed you to put the joint inside of te bottle and then squeeze out the smoke, like what we called a shotgun...

He woke me up after blasting me with almost a whole joint of black african creeper dope.

I was very stoned and so I trotted off to work with a buzz that lingered all day.

But when the pages all got together around lunch, this one black guy sat down next to me. I was still feeling a little "high" so on what ever instinct I had for that farcical, I turned to him and introduced my self and asked if he would be so kind as to be my friend so I could complete my liberal education...

He cracked up and we became fast friends.

Lost track of him when I left the statehouse two years later.

But here is the kicker, he was a republican....

I cannot even imagine anything like that happening now, and not just because of the pot jug.

The mix of ideas, the plain idea of cooperating and having some fun along the way...those are not part of the mix, and it's a shame.

We have lost so much...
