Teabagger David Brat’s stunning defeat of Eric Cantor in Virginia should put us all on notice – the ultra-right in this country can successfully field winning faith-based candidates with questionable concepts about how to solve our nation’s problems. Brat believes, among other things, that the Affordable Care Act should be eliminated along with all employer-based insurance so that people will buy their own health care policies. How this is supposed to fix the health care crisis is uncertain. Maybe he’ll pray about it and give us a reasonable answer once he has been properly counseled by Jesus.
Brat also states that our nation is so rich we can magically solve the coming global warming disaster because wealthy countries always solve their problems. Uh-huh. There’s a viable solution! All that’s needed to reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere is a big sweaty pile of cash! Think about it – the brothers Koch could stop global climate change right now, simply by dumping their pocket change onto the cosmic collection plate.
As kooky as he is, Brat may be, in fact, one of the lessor Neocon offenders in the Tea Party barrel. There are far scarier knuckle-draggers we need to put on the watch list. For example, Oklahoma’s Scott Esk advocates stoning homosexuals to death. Yes, he’s serious, as Crooks and Liars reports:
Voters in Oklahoma’s State House District 91 currently have a candidate put before them that is either in the wrong century or on the wrong continent. Tea Party state House candidate Scott Esk had quite a disturbing Facebook conversation in July of 2013, in the wake of Pope Francis’s alarmingly pragmatic suggestion that he would not judge the LGBT community.
An Oklahoma magazine, The Moore Daily, uncovered the jaw-dropping Facebook comments, in which Esk claimed that we would be “totally in the right” if we stoned homosexuals to death.Worse yet, when contacted by the magazine recently to confirm the statements, he didn’t deny anything.
That was done in the Old Testament under a law that came directly from God and in that time there it was totally just. It came directly from God. I have no plans to reinstitute that in Oklahoma law. I do have some very huge moral misgivings about those kinds of sins.
The only tactic that Esk seemed to employ throughout the interview to save his skin was repeating his disdain for the U.S. government. It’s sad, but we’ve gotten to the point where violent hatred of your country’s government is considered a safe, moderate talking point for a Republican hopeful.
Okay, so Esk is only running for the state house . . . for now. Cancer always starts small, and it’s only a matter of time before he would try to metastasize to Capitol Hill. Another hopeful in Indiana advocates letting “the poor” wither and die. Wow, how Christ-like are these compassionate conservatives. That is, if your Christian beliefs trend toward the Pastor Hagee variety. Crooks and Liars again:
An Indiana Republican is scurrying to backtrack on a controversial Facebook comment he made regarding the poor. Indiana House candidate John Johnston made the denigrating remarks on the social media site, where he said, “No one has the guts to just let them wither and die.”
Johnston’s full Facebook post read:
“For almost three generations people, in some cases, have been given handouts. They have been ‘enabled’ so much that their paradigm in life is simply being given the stuff of life, however meager. What you see is a setting for a life of misery is life to them never-the-less. No one has the guts to just let them wither and die. No one who wants votes is willing to call a spade a spade. As long as the Dems can get their votes the enabling will continue. The Republicans need their votes and dare not cut the fiscal tether. It is really a political Catch-22. The voters are the ones in charge. however when only 10-11 percent show up to vote, not much will change. People simply are not hurting enough, or simply happy enough that they will do nothing. consequently the dole continues.”
So there you go. A couple of Teabaggers that would make Ayn Rand proud, coming soon to a legislature near you.
