Cantor lost because he gerrymandered his district to the extreme right, which he

thought he was. Little did he consider the wackadoodles that are even further right than he is. His manipulation of the districts came back to bite him in the butt.

He was in Washington DC at a Lobby meeting/fundraiser the very morning of the election. He was so out of touch and good riddance to him.

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Va-Voters-Go-to-Polls-in-3-US-House-Districts-262495581.html

"Despite the political ramifications of his loss, the election had a low turnout of approximately 12 percent in Commonwealth's left-leaning 7th District. According to Virginia's "sore loser" law, Cantor cannot run as a third-party candidate in the 7th District election, but can be a written in candidate.

The upset capped a contentious campaign that had seen a powerful incumbent and erstwhile darling of the tea party become its target, as Brat led a chorus of critics branding him a Beltway insider who had lost touch with his conservative base."

it tends right. Teabug 'stupid' got him.

but a victory for Trammell in the 7th would not be unprecedented. In the 2008 U.S. Senate race, former Democratic governor Mark Warner defeated former Republican governor Jim Gilmore by about a 60 to 39 percent spread among voters in the district. While it has since been somewhat altered in the 2011 redistricting, the surrounding areas also voted for Warner in similar numbers.
What’s more, a couple of polls of the 7th indicate that on some issues, it may be well to the left of the Republican Brat. A PPP poll of registered voters released Tuesday found that 72 percent supported comprehensive immigration reform including a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Even among self-identified Republicans, 70 percent back a path to citizenship and 58 percent consider reform “very important.” Brat’s primary campaign focused heavily on his opposition to “amnesty.”

It probably costs the GOP an additional seat in Congress to make Cantor's 7th "invincible". Most of the surrounding districts are purple-blue because Cantor's seat took so many red areas of NoVA and Central VA.
