Noam Chomsky: A Surveillance State Beyond Imagination Is Being Created in One of the World's Freest Countries

In the past several months, we have been provided with instructive lessons on the nature of state power and the forces that drive state policy. And on a closely related matter: the subtle, differentiated concept of transparency.

The source of the instruction, of course, is the trove of documents about the National Security Agency surveillance system released by the courageous fighter for freedom Edward J. Snowden, expertly summarized and analyzed by his collaborator Glenn Greenwald in his new book, " No Place to Hide."

The documents unveil a remarkable project to expose to state scrutiny vital information about every person who falls within the grasp of the colossus - in principle, every person linked to the modern electronic society.

Nothing so ambitious was imagined by the dystopian prophets of grim totalitarian worlds ahead.

to protect the people's privacy from government spying.

It was inevitable that after the shock wore off after learning of these violations of people's rights, that people would recover and begin to fight back.

We KNOW that the very government that has approved of these egregious crimes against the people will not end them, they will pretend to put 'reforms' in place, but I think most people know that they will not.

So a movement has started where people can protect their phones and computers from the Government.

I will post a link when I find it again. The movement is growing. I don't know how effective the protections will be, but it's a start.

If there were intruders in our physical homes, we would take action to stop them from entering our homes. This is no different and I believe many people are taking action on their own to block the Government spies from their personal lives.

South America eg, is planning to develop its own internet and to bypass the US so that it can protect its own citizens from US spies.

It's a start, at least it shows people are now THINKING about how to defend themselves from the government spying on them. Hopefully those who understand the technology will develop effective defenses for the people so they can keep their privacy intact. But this is a good sign, imo.

Wait, Biden is an old white man, isn't he? Bernie Sanders? Clinton? And do not ever again criticize people like Condi or Thomas, I learned that also on DU.

Some folks will do and say anything to obscure the issue. When I think of the enemies of my freedoms, I don't think of the Edward Snowdens, I think of the authoritarian tools who are wiling to give it all up for political expedience.

facts or not? Snowden has spoken for himself on Russia and freedom. Assuming you did not know that, which I will do for argument's sake, now that you know what you just said was incorrect, I'm sure you won't perpetuate it.

19. Red-light cameras being stopped across Southern California, country

By Steve Scauzillo, San Gabriel Valley Tribune
POSTED: 01/21/14, 7:33 PM PST | UPDATED: ON 01/21/2014 1 COMMENT

Red-light cameras — controversial traffic enforcement devices that can ding an unsuspecting motorist for $500 a pop for minor infractions like illegally turning right on red — are slowly fading to black.

For the first time since they were introduced in the 1980s, statistics show a large drop in the number of cities and counties using the photo enforcement systems. . . .

According to a not-yet-released report on red-light cameras from the Reason Foundation, the number of communities with red-light cameras in the United States has dropped from about 700 in 2011 to 500 at the end of 2013.
