By Michael O’Connor / World-Herald staff writer

Maya Angelou, a celebrated poet and novelist, was set to visit Omaha in June for an appearance at the Orpheum Theater. “An Evening with Maya Angelou” was to feature her speaking about her life and writings.

She died Wednesday at age 86, and is remembered for becoming one of the first black women to enjoy mainstream success as an author.
The World-Herald talked with her by phone in mid-May for a Q&A that was to run in advance of her Omaha visit. In that 10-minute interview, she spoke about the relationship between mothers and daughters, her interest in healthy eating and the state of poetry in America today. (Answers are paraphrased)
