It is a new one...the May Camelopardalis shower. Could be spectacular....but these things are unpredictable!
Yes...I will be watching near a lake close to my house with a very dark sky...
So..we reconvene here to share what we saw...hoping it is like the 1999/2000 Leonids!

(4,452 posts)Unfortunately as is usually the case, I will have to deal with cloud cover.

(14,733 posts)We'll probably throw some cherry in the chiminea when it starts to get dark, watch the fire for a while, then let it burn down and watch the skies for a bit, but we're still in baseball season and hockey playoffs, I think, so the housemate will probably spend more of the night indoors than out.

(11,362 posts)... even though it should be clear skies here tonight, there's a lot of light pollution. I'm just outside Chicago.
It sounds like it'll be a good one.

(86,664 posts)a friend and I have vowed to make sure we watch it, whomever is up at the specified time will call the other to make sure.
Hope it's good, hope it's clear, we have patchy clouds right now and it's 50/50 chance as to whether it will be clear enough to see. Now I have to figure out how to take timed night exposures on my camera with which I am less than confidently familiar.
Good luck everybody, hope we get a good show!

(40,416 posts)And my sky is dark here -- at least as dark as they get in the lower peninsula.
I have a comfy chair and will bundle up. It is going to be a little chilly tonight.

(330 posts)First, it's way past my bedtime. When I was younger I caught every one. The Perseids were amazing.
Second, I'm in Chicago now rather than rural western Illinois. There was no light pollution out there. You could see every star. Not so much here.
Keep looking to the stars!

(14,910 posts)It's supposed to clear late, so we will either catch some clearing or it will clear out after dawn...
Mostly clear tomorrow night, so we're hoping to be able to catch some action tomorrow night.
To add: I can only hope it's as spectacular as the 99/00 Leonids. That was an epic event!
Happy viewing!

(25,816 posts)Skies are clear but meteors seem scarce. went outside at 11 PM and stared at the sky to the north. Went in after about 15 minutes to warm up and grab a beer. My neck had begun to hurt. Went back out, watching for snakes, and stared again at the sky, pausing to guzzle cheap beer. Nothing. I finish my beer and proceed to take a leak. (Don't worry, I live in the boonies) Right then, I saw a good one, bright and long and it burst into parts at the end. I went in and got Jeannie. We came out and stared. My neck hurts.

(86,664 posts)intervals from midnight (local) to 3:15am. Only saw one and wasn't too keen on hanging with the bear that was near-by. Was partly cloudy until about 12:30 and then was all clear.
No light pollution here but I only saw one nice streamer at about 2:45am. My neck hurt too so I decided to cash in. My friend never called but they had to go to work early so they probably did the right thing.
I may have a look again tonight if it's clear out.
Earth_First
(14,910 posts)It finally cleared here within the past 15 minutes, however dawn is rapidly approaching.
I guess we'll try for tonight...

(60,015 posts)I spent a pleasant hour at the edge of a lake near my home - from 2-3 AM EST - serenaded the entire time by a Chuck Will's Widow, various crickets and frogs and some fighting mammals of some sort, along with jumping fish and countless fireflies - it was magical...except only 2 meteors were seen, despite perfect viewing conditions - and I don't think they were part of the Camelopardalids (they were moving in the wrong direction) - one very faint, one a bit better that streaked through the bowl of the big dipper toward Polaris.
Oh well....I also got to see countless deer marauding in and around our neighborhood - they are the REAL managers of where I live (and cause tremendous damage to things that grow - but it isn't their fault - we moved in and took their land!)
