Ted Cruz drops bombshell: Senate Democrats to ‘repeal the First Amendment’ this year

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) drew audible gasps Thursday when he told gathering of Christian conservatives that Democrats intended to amend the Constitution to limit free speech.

“When you think it can’t get any worse, it does,” Cruz warned at the Watchmen on the Wall gathering of pastors sponsored by the Family Research Council.

“This year, I’m sorry to tell you, the United States Senate is going to be voting on a constitutional amendment to repeal the First Amendment,” Cruz said, to the audible shock of the crowd.

The Tea Party-backed senator said Senate Democrats intend to vote this year on Senate Joint Resolution 19, which would effectively undo the unpopular U.S. Supreme Court decisions on campaign financing in the Citizens United and McCutcheon cases.

1. He might be alluding to Citizens United.

Bernie Sanders has talked about an amendment to the constitution stating that congress can haver more control to regulate campaign money. With Ted it's hard to tell. He might just be making it up.

Sometimes I feel he is like Don Quixote tilting at windmills. No one, including our side, is paying serious attention to him.

7. Citizens United wasn't about campaign money. McCutcheon was.

I think <i>McCutcheon</i> was a bad decision.

But on <i>Citizens United</i>, I don't see how the government stop the distribution of a movie, without bumping up against the 1st amendment.

5. There is a procedure to amend the constitution and it involves both

houses of congress and either 2/3 or 3/4 of the states.
He's is probably referring to a bill to get around the supremes and make a law to limit campaign money in some way.
