NY Post: The 9/11 museum’s absurd gift shop

(Note: I had no idea the 9-11 Museum at Ground Zero would include, of all things, a damned GIFT SHOP! It's hawking mostly NYPD-, Port Authorit6y Police- and NYFD-branded trinkets and items of clothing, or items bearing the kind of cheap consolation of the greeting card industry. It is fitting that a 9-11 Memorial Museum exist at Ground Zero. But if it is fitting to have a memorial and/or museum to commemorate a national tragedy that had enormous impact upon the country as a whole, then it is equally fitting that federal revenues should be used to operate it and sustain it to the extent admissions fees fail to cover expenses. This is just in outrageously offensive bad taste! And if even the New York Post is offended by it, that should really tell you something!)

The 9/11 museum’s cavernous boutique offers a vast array of souvenir goods. For example: FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority Police T-shirts ($22) and caps ($19.95); earrings molded from leaves and blossoms of downtown trees ($20 to $68); cop and firefighter charms by Pandora and other jewelers ($65); “United We Stand” blankets.

There are bracelets, bowls, buttons, mugs, mousepads, magnets, key chains, flags, pins, stuffed animals, toy firetrucks, cellphone cases, tote bags, books and DVDs.

Even FDNY vests for dogs come in all sizes.

After paying $24 admission for adults, $18 for seniors and students, and $15 for kids 7 to 17, visitors can shop till they drop.

It is true, though, that it seems more excessive these days. That's probably from the increased number of victims lately. There will probably be a "gift shop" at Sandy Hook if there isn't one already.

the officers and fireworkers that died in 911 were all the good ones. What's left are ????

The ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice deserve our respect. They don't deserve a mini Coney Island and trinkets that support those less honorable among their peers.

It's just the nature of the beast. Even the Holocaust Museum in DC has one.

perhaps they should put out a commemorative miniature twins towers that has fake smoke coming from them?

The people of NYC wanted a memorial park. The moneyed interests wanted a shining example of gross capitalism.

and here we are.

bobbles for the dead. so "we never forget".

I lost friends in the twin towers. Let me tell you, I will never forget them.

and I seriously doubt anyone else in this nation will forget.

we are a nation of money addled ghouls.

and visited the 9/11 Memorial (which also has its own gift shop). I was actually kinda surprised they had a gift shop...it seems a bit macabre and uncaring at the same time. I don't understand why anyone (other than those that perpetrated the crime) would want to profit from the tragedy. I get that's how most museum's make money but this isn't your typical museum. Also, they accept donations too, which I thought kinda odd.

Or how about a water bottle that says "9/11 Honor and Remember" (and hydrate)?

Maybe a snazzy 9/11 wallet, so when you look inside you can think of the money that was made off the dead?

Or a stuffed cadaver sniffing/ rescue dog for the kiddies?

This is disgusting
