Saw her a few days ago in the morning...about 5 weeks old, ridiculously friendly, even ate from my hand so I got a carrier and put her in. She's a tortie, so I wonder if she was dumped because she didn't act like a feral. Then I noticed how bad her left eye was...it wasn't noticeable the other day (since it was 3 a.m.), so I took her to the vet. She's got URI really bad and a corneal something or other and she's on topical and oral antibiotics and I also have eyedrops. Her energy and appetite are really good and is a real sweetheart so once I get her healthy I'm sure she'll get a home. It's her left eye, and her right eye is fine. She's not in danger of dying, but I'd like for her to be able to keep that left one. I'll take some photos tomorrow once I work with her some more. Thanks.
Good news...I took the other two in at the same time since they needed their second shots. Careen, the calico, has put on a pound, Suellen, the tortie, about 10 ounces.

(111,302 posts)Little Miss Scarlett will need very careful attention to cure that kennel cough and try to save her eye. One eyed cats do very well, but I think we'd all prefer she have two.
Two torties and a calico? Your house is going to be jumping with serious cattitude. Torties and calicos are always wild women. No wonder they're my favorites.

(111,302 posts)I have a friend in the UK who collects Maine coon cats and I'll deliver her advice on cat proofing to you: do a walkthrough and throw bowling balls around. Anything that survives is cat proofed.
My little old tortie is a Maine coon. She's almost 21 and the advice still stands.

(56,177 posts)until she's healthy, and she's been playing with my toes...she's clearly feeling better. Ashley, my one male, has to be part Maine coon, he looks and acts it, although he was a 4-week resuce kitten so I don't know his background.

(56,177 posts)I have to keep her separate from the other little ones, so I just sat with her for about an hour and all she wanted to do was be held and cuddled...she's a sweetie, alright.

(5,071 posts)We had one foster baby who supposedly had 10% vision from the same reason as Scarlett. Between her and her brother, they had one good eye. Brother carefully led her around to the litter box and the food. One day we saw her diving after his lashing tail, and we knew she had some sight. She loved to chase her toys around the kitchen floor, and everything was a toy. I bought her lots of "sounding" toys, but she really didn't need them, and she was always the first to discover new toys, even the not-toys we'd prefer she left alone. We had offers for adoption--everyone felt sorry for the poor almost blind kitty, but we kept her and her brother.

(56,177 posts)The little one has more energy today...unfortunately I need to keep her from the other little ones until she's better, so she's in the bathroom with her bed food and litterbox...she's taking it in stride, and when I go in, she runs to greet me...never had a feral be that friendly.

And shame on the person who dumped this 5 week old kitty, probably because of the health issues. I hate the things some people do to animals...................and I LOVE what people like you do for animals.

(56,177 posts)She's playing and eating well...I think she wants to go out and join the others, but the last 2 I took in are still small and were on meds and would be vulnerable to her URI, so she's gotta stay there for a little longer.

(10,164 posts)Kitten eye infections are very common, and while they do indeed pose a threat to her eye, they are also very treatable if caught in time (which I suspect is the case, since you caught it so quickly).
Special place in my heart for torties...my beloved Spookie is a tortie-girl.

(56,177 posts)She's doing better...her eye looks a little blurry still, but she wasn't able to open it before...she is the sweetest thing, though, I could hug her all day and she'd be fine with that!
