Well played, BTW.

And, BTW, who dressed him? Horrible sweater vest. Not only politically and mentally, but also sartorially challenged.

Paranoids showing paranoia about other paranoids.....

3. That smile always gave me chills.

It was like a death-grimace. At least I saw it that way. Or a "HA-HA-HA! GOTCHA!" Or a "Looks like you fell for it, DUMB-ASS!"

Gave me chills. I'd see his cockeyed smile all over the place during those horrid eight years and just shake my head. How MANY people were just falling for it like those big sides of ice splintering off of the glaciers. How MANY there were. How MANY thought - oh, isn't he just the greatest! Captain A-MERRR-rica is here and we're SAVED!!!! It all sounds SOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!! There's a guy on MSNBC now talking about how reagan wrapped his cold-hearted ideology in nice-warm-fuzzy-comfy-optimistic-happytalk plastic paint - with a radioactive half-life. He made it sound SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOD - all red-white-&-blue "Morning in America" stuff with stirring speeches and rather cleverly-crafted word choices and turns of phrase. All that actor stuff during his years in Hollywood sure paid off. But WE THE PEOPLE wound up paying through the nose for it.

I look back on those years and they seem an awful lot like "Demon-Seed Years" - when a lot of this evil that now grips our nation and hurts our poor and screws our elderly and shuts out our disadvantaged and blasphemes our Constitution and cheapens our values GOT STARTED. The 1980s was the start. That's when the evil that has gripped our nation got its start. And got plenty of vitamin B-12 and careful nurturing. And it's grown and matured into a FUCKING MONSTER!!! One that's not only destroying America but threatens the survival of our entire planet.

It ALL started with THIS cheap-salesman bastard who knew NOTHING - except how to talk a good game.

4. Reagan was many things--among them, actor and zombie

During his time in office, he was widely beloved. If you asked anyone--even his admirers--why, you would not get a satisfactory answer. Something along the lines of "he just is" or "I really admire him".

I think it was a case of transference. Being "quick with a quip" given to story-telling, he was the "acting president" whose exemplar was John Kennedy. That love for President Kennedy was transferred to the once-divorced Rotgut Ronnie.

He, or his handlers, nurtured this fiction to the point that Ted Kennedy called him out on invoking John Kennedy's good name while being absolutely hostile to any programs Kennedy would have favored.

Zombie? He actually died in the emergency room after being shot. They shocked him to bring him back. His handlers would admit, quietly, that he never really fully recovered.

unreasonable.

A) It was discovered he was a lot more seriously wounded than anybody thought.

B) His age. Already.

C) Daily observations of his demeanor and behavior afterwards. How "Mommie" had to whisper quietly, standing just behind and to the side of him, what he was supposed to say into the microphones. How he was constantly managed and handled and how Nancy wielded such an iron fist in the White House and had such clout - and wasn't afraid to use it. How they'd prop him up with all kinds of scenery and staging and Busby Berkeley-style choreography and three-story-tall American flags (that he was photographed in front of, from below, so he, too, looked like a giant from below - at the worshippers' eye view). That probably helped make him come alive - because it harkened back to those "good ol' days" of his about which he fondly story-told and recollected. He was great at delivering lines and reading cue cards. Like the actor he always was. And there were enough shrewd shark-like manipulators around him to exploit that for the greater agenda they wanted to advance: the overturning and rolling back of #1- the New Deal and #2- all the additional progress (on civil rights, voting rights, women's rights, reproductive rights, and more) that we accomplished for the greater good during the '60s and early '70s.

A friend of mine's mother was an actress during the 50's and 60's and knew Ronnie, and she'd still get invited to parties and receptions and social gatherings on the celebrity side of Los Angeles. She once told me about the last time she attended one of those where ronnie and nancy were the guests of honor. I'll never forget what she said: "she led him around the room by the pinkie finger. He was nothing but a doddering old man."

He was little better than one of those life-size cardboard cut-outs that you see standing up where lots of tourists congregate, and you can stand next to them and have your picture taken as though you were with the "real thing."

But according to the Kitty Kelley book I read about the reagans, I am "proud" to think that America was actually being led around during those years by an individual who was evidently known privately as the best blow-job-giver in Hollywood.
