Republicans were outraged because they didnt want the First Lady to fill the minds of the sacred youth with words like diversity and equality.
Michelle Obama delivered an uplifting message to grads about the future and their role in it, and that is the last thing that the aged, dead, and dying Republican Party wanted the red state youths to hear.

My guess is that they are mad that her speech doesn't follow an Ayn Rand novel morality.

(11,990 posts)I know you were just copying the headline from the original article, but it's a bad, misleading headline. Republican Heads Explode? That implies there has been, at the least, some criticism from the right. The article points to none, and instead starts off with "Republican heads will certainly explode" (when they hear the speech). Not so much as a single quote from anyone who took any offense. The article goes on to say "Republicans were outraged" (as you quoted) and that they were "up in arms," providing absolutely no evidence of that.

(11,990 posts)I thought there was going to be a story there, about, you know, Republicans actually objecting to the speech. There wasn't. Classic click-bait, and a waste of time.

(8,379 posts)A euphemism.

(11,990 posts)Of course I didn't think heads were literally exploding. But the phrase would be a way of indicating outrage, being infuriated, etc.. There is no indication in the article that any such reaction occurred, that any republican is the least bit upset about the speech. Not a single quote or reference. The headline appears to be fiction. Not because heads didn't literally explode (duh), but because they didn't figuratively/metaphorically explode, either. No actual outrage was in evidence.
(BTW, it's not actually a euphemism. A euphemism is a gentler, more polite way of saying something.)
