Bill Press' PARTING SHOT
A funny thing happened at the White House yesterday:
A top Obama administration official announced his support for same-sex marriage and everybody yawned.
It happened at our daily briefing, where Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx made his first appearance before White House reporters to drum up support for the administrations bill to get more money for the Highway Trust Fund.
Most of the questions, of course, were about transportation-related issues: How bad were our roads and highways? When would the trust fund run out of money? What if Congress did nothing? What alternatives to the gas tax was the administration looking at?
When one reporter asked an off-the-road question: Since a Virginia court was considering the states ban on same-sex marriage
And since Virginia and North Carolina were in the same federal judicial district
And since he was former mayor of Charlotte
Did he support same-sex marriage?
Foxx didnt hesitate a moment: Yes, I support same-sex marriage.
And
heres the news: It wasnt news. Two years ago, it would have made headlines. Today, nobody blinked. Its simply taken for granted that anybody with half a brain would support marriage equality.
Weve come a long way, baby.
Thats my parting shot for today. Im Bill Press.
