I don’t write fiction because life has a way of dwarfing anything I can make up. It’s not that my imagination is arid, but I lack the sheer craziness that drives so much of our world, the perverse logic and bellyful of hatred that seems to roll so many people out of bed in the morning.

For instance.

Last Monday I wrote that schoolchildren should go to school on Columbus and Pulaski days. If you had asked me, beforehand, what kind of reader response such an opinion might draw, I would have guessed that I’d hear from politely offended Italian gentlemen and angry Polish individuals with a thing or two to say about my own ethnicity.

Wrong.

of being suspicious because he was wearing a hoodie on a rainy night?

The writer in the article suggest that this is common:

What divides up this country is that some kids risk being shot by wearing a hoodie to the convenience store, and others don’t. My boys wear hoodies without anyone suggesting they invite being murdered.

I'm white and I have never found hoodies suspicious in the least, but I am not a cop wannabe.
