33 years ago today Bob Marley died - now Keith Richards covers Get Up Stand Up for Charity

English singer and original member of the Rolling Stones band, Keith Richards, has collaborated with a number of musicians across the globe for a cover of Bob Marley's Get Up Stand Up for charity.

The charity, Playing for Change, aims to "inspire and connect the world through music". It also hopes to erect music and art schools around the world from the funds generated.

It is also being reported that Keith Richards, American contemporary blues guitarist and singer, Keb' Mo', and Jamaican reggae singer Sherieta Lewis are among an all-star cast slated to record a tribute album to the late reggae legend.

Online reports also state that the album, scheduled for a June release, will feature tracks from Latino rock band Los Lobos, reggae veteran Toots Hibbert, and blues guitarist Taj Mahal.

This would not be the first time the Rolling Stones guitarist has tried his hand at reggae music.

Bob's music is the best, but Toots and the Maytals put out some amazingly good reggae that never got the recognition it deserved.

The young man who threw a vodka bottle that struck Frederick “Toots” Hibbert at last summer’s Dominion Riverrock (see below), William Connor Lewis, will serve jail time for the offense after pleading guilty on Thursday to assault and battery.

Judge Margaret Spencer ordered Lewis to serve six months, less than the one-year jail term Richmond prosecutors argued for.

But Hibbert, lead singer for Toots & the Maytals, wrote a letter, which was read during yesterday’s court proceedings, asking that Lewis not serve jail time at all.

“He is a young man, and I have heard what happens to young men in jail,” wrote Hibbert. “My own pain and suffering would be increased substantially knowing that this young man would face that prospect.”

By the way that new Reebok ad with 'What a Bam Bam ' playing is a cover for the very first 'festival song'.

One of the reasons Toots and the Maytals never achieved the popularity of Bob and the Wailers is that they were more part of the local festival song tradition (a competition during the run up to independence celebrations) rather than the international circuit.
