If Sam does get drafted, the team that picks him will get to look forward to dealing with Washington, DC lobbyist Jack Burkman who, as part of his campaign to pass legislation that would ban openly gay players from playing in the NFL, is vowing to unleash a "relentness" boycott against the team that drafts him.
Burkman says that he has a "coalition of Evangelical Christian leaders from across the nation" ready to go as soon as Sam is drafted who will teach the NFL that "when you trample the Christian community and Christian values, there will be a terrible financial price to pay":

(14,449 posts)I guess we are playing tit for tat here. All sides need to come to some resolution or this back and forth stuff will continue to happen forever. At a gay guy, I really don't want all this bickering going on. I can't keep up with all the boycotts all over the place going on and then the places that are pro-gay keeping up with that list. I wish everyone would just get along. This is not rocket science here.

(11,841 posts)I love that line, "I can't keep up with all the boycotts all over the place going on and then the places that are pro-gay keeping up with that list"
And its not just pro-gay, think of all the other stuff too. There's companies that advertise on some show some dont like, owned by Koch brothers, wal mart, non union, etc etc.
It ends up being a part time job trying to keep up with it all!!

(907 posts)I shall repeat a particular comment by Dale Hansen, Dallas sports anchor for ABC local affiliate WFAA. Most of you have probably already read or heard his comment, which is quite appropriate for the subject of this topic.
You beat a woman and drag her down a flight of stairs, pulling her hair out by the roots? You're the fourth guy taken in the NFL draft. You kill people while driving drunk? That guy's welcome. Players caught in hotel rooms with illegal drugs and prostitutes? We know they're welcome. Players accused of rape and pay the woman to go away? You lie to police, trying to cover up a murder? We're comfortable with that. You love another man? Well, now you've gone too far!

(21,646 posts)History bears repeating: The Michael Vick investigation began in April 2007 with a search of Bad Newz Kennels, located on Vicks Virginia property. We at the ASPCA were involved early on, assisting in the recovery and analysis of forensic evidence from Vicks property, including carcasses and skeletal remains of numerous....
This was not a crime of passion or a case of obliviousness. Michael Vick was fully involved in a six-year pattern of illegal activity that included dogs being savagely electrocuted, drowned, and beaten to death.
Now years later >March 26, 2014
On Friday, the New York Jets signed Michael Vick to a one-year contract worth $5 million!!!!......................'.We're comfortable with that. You love another man? Well, now you've gone too far! ' Ain't that the truth..
http://nypost.com/2014/03/26/why-we-cant-forget-michael-vicks-dog-fighting-past/
EDit to add: I am not sure how these haters view animals though
They may feel they are dominant over the earth - a chosen species , so maybe they would not think Vick's actions are disgraceful even if they thought about it
Heck some of those other actions mentioned may be due and just in their book too !!

(5,586 posts)Michael Vick spent real time in prison. He didn't get a slap on the wrist. He didn't walk away scot free. Prison.
Now he got out, and has worked hard at his job, and he gets paid like the others performing the same job. He did NOT get some kind of reward for running a dog fighting operation. If he was a manager at a Waffle House, nobody would care one bit.
Now I admire Michael Sam for coming out and being true to himself. Whether or not he has the ability to be a good football player remains to be seen. Protesting a team willing to hire a gay player is the height of idiocy.
Besides, in 5 years there are going to be dozens of players who've come out. It's like they're standing outside with a storm coming and yelling at nature to stop raining.

Not gonna happen. If they could deal with a guy named Muhammed who was a great boxer, a guy named Kareem who was a great basketball player, the football fans among them are not going to quit football because one guy is gay. And crap like this makes them have to confront "how far are we gonna take this", which leads to "why get so worked up over shit that doesn't affect me and doesn't matter?"
No, and maybe I'm just uninformed, but I don't think that gay men emit magic gay rays that will make your kid "decide to be gay" because he sees a gay man play football. It wasn't some kind of divine protection which made you stay straight through years of listening to Elton John when you were a kid. I wore the grooves smooth on my copy of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road when I was a kid and, through some amazing stroke of luck, turned out straight. Now, as I tell my wife, "either I'm straight or the right guy has just never come along", but I gotta think that if Elton John failed to make a generation gay in the 70's, then watching a gay man play football won't affect who your kid is, one way or another.
The more extreme these crazy folks go with this stuff, the more followers they lose. They are like the Black Knight from Monty Python. As their ability to effectively do anything is progressively diminished, the more their rhetorical belligerence increases.

Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)A team doesn't know in advance exactly which players will be available when it picks, so when it's that team's pick the staff will often need some time to decide whom to take.
In addition, there are draft-day deals. Two teams might swap their picks in a particular round, with the team that moved down getting compensation in the form of the other team's pick in a later round. More complicated deals have also occurred. Negotiating such deals sometimes occurs during the last few minutes before a team has to make its decision.
But, yes, there is a "big old production" element of it, too. Football fans have gone months without a game and even the next preseason exhibition game is still months away, so the NFL takes this opportunity to give them a football fix.

Or even better:they extend the protest to all St. Louis teams and decide to protest the Cardinals outside of Busch Stadium or the Blues outside of Scottrade Center?
In a case like this, no words are necessary. They will open their mouths and spew their garbage while the fans will buy his jerseys and tickets might actually sell out.

(The game most are talking about is the Raiders game in November, since KC fans hate the Raiders anyway. That way, they don't feel like traitors for rooting for the Rams.)
He attended Mizzou, his boyfriend swam for Mizzou (there's a pic up online of him competing in the Butterfly), his boyfriend graduated from Rockhurst HS in KC and currently works for Cumulus as an intern. The people who are looking past the most obvious (at least to the redneck crowd) see this as a Missouri couple-a couple of Missouri boys (I know he's from Texas but after playing for Mizzou he's been adopted) who've done good and are keeping their talents in-state. And St Louis is relatively LGBTQ friendly. It's where most of my gay classmates moved twentysomething years ago and has become even friendlier in the meantime. They will be more than welcome as a couple in STL.

(29,674 posts)can we, the people of Missouri, already start saving for a bust of Sam to be entered in the state house in Jeff City. And even better-can it be put right next to Rush's bust?

(67,109 posts)is quite clear. It's a shame individuals such as he gets a loud megaphone drowning out the good Christians. I've never know any gay person to be so fixated on sex such as these individuals, like WTF is wrong with them. It's really quite sick.

(3,596 posts)The NFL is a private business that has been granted broad immunity privileges.
Does this bigot thinks Congress has the stomach to take on the powerful NFL lobby because he feels persecuted? If he doesn't want to watch a homo play football turn off the television and get on your knees and pray.
Congress will take no action and the NFL will ignore him.
Me thinks he has some homo-erotic tendencies if he is so fixated on what a player does off the field. Most of us that watch football look at what is going on on the field. We really don't care what they do off field.
What a doofus.

(1,325 posts)Trying to start a boycott because a gay player got drafted seems a bit bigoted, wasteful, and pathetic.
This lobby and their stupid lobbyist needs to look in the mirror and ask themselves if ANY PERSON they know has gone from straight to gay, who wasn't already gay to begin with. Mr. Sam was in the Mizzou locker room for years and only he was gay- so probably nobody else in that locker room turned gay. It disproves their 'beliefs' but we know how crazy people can stick with beliefs (FireDogLake, Orly Taiz, Donald Dump).
They should be boycotting over rigged games, injuries, underpaid cheerleaders, etc etc
