Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Tuesday asserted that men were not living up to their manly responsibility by letting women pay for dinner and by not participating in activities like hunting. British TV host Bear Grylls opined at a recent luncheon for his new adventure reality show that manliness was in crisis because the modern man was relying on technology instead of your spear, your brains, your resourcefulness, your courage.
I think this is real, Carlson agreed on Tuesdays edition of Fox News. Part of it is somebody told boys when they were little, Be sensitive, be thoughtful. And some of thats fine, too much of it makes you pretty unattractive to women. And this is one of the reasons, because it suggests weakness. I blame it on the feminist movement, Fox News host Katie Pavlich remarked. Because the feminist movement for decades has told men not to embraces their manliness, that is part of the patriarchy of our society. And that being a man is a bad thing. And that you should downgrade your manliness. And saying man up is not acceptable because manning up is not based on gender.
They have all these things where they take the man part out of being a man, she added. And then we wonder why men dont act like men anymore. Carlson argued that men did not necessarily need to hunt and fish to be masculine. Men, who on the second date, let their date pay for dinner, Im sorry thats disgusting, he insisted. And I dont care. The new norms are he shouldnt allow it. Period.
Co-host Sandra Smith pointed out that men could show respect for women and not assume that hes the macho man who needs to pay for dinner. He should be the macho man, Carlson shot back. He ought to have respect for himself. Are you kidding? Let a girl pay? What are you joking? n recent days, Fox News has aired multiple segments suggesting that female breadwinners could be a problem. Isnt there some sort of biological, innate need for me to be the caveman? host Clayton Morris wondered over the weekend. Go out and bring home the dinner. Is it emasculating if we dont do it?

I have paid for woman's meals millions of times and I have had my meals paid by woman millions of times. What is the big deal?

(22,271 posts)And I say that as a female. It's bullshit and sexist as hell to believe that the man should ALWAYS pay. I always liked to split the evening. You pay for the dinner, I'll pay to get into the movie theater. Or if I was broke (often the case), I love to cook and would be happy to reciprocate a night out for dinner he paid for with a nice, home-cooked meal. That way the financial burden is never on one person. Besides, I always HATED the macho nacho type. Give me a nice, regular, working-class guy any day.

(3,596 posts)Does he not know that women outnumber and outperform men in secondary education and that law schools are turning out more women lawyers than men?
I only point that out because there are many heterosexual households where the woman earns more, and in some cases significantly more, than the man.
There are some households that, for a variety of reasons, decide to have the man either leave the workforce to stay home and raise the children while they are young and take care of the home or work reduced hours to provide more time for nurture and care.
I doubt that the women in those households would agree that their male mates are any less manly or sexy because of these facts. I doubt that the men in those situations would consider themselves emasculated or in any way less a man.
Tucker needs to get out more in the real world. And for one I would love to see him try to spear anything. That would be hilarious.

(6,342 posts)...I was in a restaurant and noticed the couple at a table across from me were getting into an argument. It was a man and a woman and apparently on a date. For the entire time they were there they talked but didn't hear much and didnt pay attention. But before they were about to leave, they started fighting over the check. I can't remember the whole thing but she wanted to pay half and he didnt want to let her. They weren't getting physical or anything like that but he was creating a scene over it. I can't imagine that relationship lasted much longer.
I guess it's sort of like how SOME guys feel their ego is threatened if the wife makes more money than they do. And it stems from gender roles. It makes the guy feel macho and dominant and has power over the woman.
Also I think some guys are worried about what a woman would think of them if they don't pay for the whole date. They may feel like the woman might not respect them.

(18,641 posts)The bow tie doesn't pay me to cover his ass for him, but that title is as misleading and incendiary as anything Huffington Post ever dreamed up to attact clicks. The original Salon title could even be seen as slander.
What Carlson said was: Men, who on the second date, let their date pay for dinner, Im sorry thats disgusting, . I'm no fan of Carlson, but that in no way says that he thinks women are disgusting. If anything, he's criticizing the men who cede to what he sees as new age social norms.
Shameful journalism purposely crafted to stoke feminist ire. It assumes no one will actually read the article, and apparently very few people do.
pipi_k
(21,020 posts)seems to be evolving into the "norm" these days.
I call it the "National Enquirer" syndrome.
You know...that piece of shit waste of paper found near the checkout aisles in the grocery stores.
Always a sensational headline!!!
But the story turns out to be something quite different.
Except I guess its only saving grace, if there is one, is that people who buy it regularly must know that the actual stories are not going to live up to the hype. But they buy it anyway. Maybe in the hopes that someday they WILL find Elvis alive and well, living in the jungles of the Amazon with some primitive tribes...
Here, unfortunately, we have misleading headlines, and as long as the headline supports or reinforces someone's belief, it doesn't really matter what the article says.
and yeah...it's not just the Right doing this shit. Gotta keep the misguided outrage going on the Left as well.

Patton Oswalt sent out a tweet this week apologizing for something he never said. He then sat back and waited for the outrage from people who really had no idea what he was talking about, but still had to weigh in on how offended they were ...and it came in spades.
What he did was simple: He started posting tweets that referenced and apologized for tweets he says he deleted because they were offensive, but of course the deleted tweets werent real. They never were. So this is what his feed looked like:

How does Gryllis relate this hunting culture to anything macho? The actual hunt does not seem to be the goal, its more of an outing and some photo ops. If they kill one of our furry friends along the way its a bonus.

(85 posts)Years ago, Maasai warriors showed us what real courage and manliness were when they faced a male lion with
only a spear - and no back-up shooters. Thankfully, we now have a greater appreciation and empathy for our fellow
creatures and an understanding of the need to preserve diversity of all species. Those brutal, nonsensical days are
mostly past history.
But we still have "he-men" like Mr. "Bear" Grylls (actually Mr. Edward Michael Grylls) who purport to show us
how a real man should act.
Why doesn't Mr. Grylls give us a real demonstration of "manliness", like the young Maasai men did?
Let him approach a wild, African, male lion in the bush with only a spear for defense. Could he hold his ground for 5 minutes?
If he passes the test, I'll buy him dinner. (Unless, of course, he has already become dinner.)

(5,376 posts)Pre-feminist era, mind you, I had several male colleagues tell me "girls" didn't need to make as much as men for the same job, 'cause we could always find a "guy" to take us out to dinner. Plus, we could of course, live with our parents or share an apartment with five other "girls", thus we needed less income. There was more, of course--we are talkin' 50s mentality--but I'll quit now by simply saying, "Tucker, you are an ignoramus and a complete asshole." Now there's a word no "well-bred girl" would use back in the 50s, no matter how much we thought it!
SoonerShankle
(322 posts)...a more disturbing issue arises from his verbal diarrhea--that this kind of misguided, sexist, and borderline misogynistic rant is considered viable on national news channel is beyond the pale (and no, I'm not giving them the "But it's Fox" excuse). Gender issues for both sexes are very real and much more complex than this segment would ever touch. There is no doubt that this segment was intended for the express purpose of perpetuating discriminatory behavior based upon gender.
And while many feel the term "man up" (or "woman up"--yes, I've heard and used it too) may mean that the man is being emasculated, they've got it all wrong. It is a term implying lack of maturity. It says quit being a little boy and act like the mature man that you are. Saying "man up" to a child is inappropriate, but asking an adult to act like an adult is not.
And then the woman in the segment, Ms. Smith, ineptly and half-heartedly tries to integrate machismo into the conversation. Thanks, but no thanks, for the token non-argument.
While I could laugh at Carlson's silly bow-tie, it is his seriously misguided rant about gender roles in our society that only goes to show how far some (ok, how far Fox) will go to legitimize bashing women.
