Its a nutritionists nightmare: The 97th annual July Fourth International Hot Dog Eating Contest is next week at New Yorks Coney Island. Last years winner scarfed down 62 Nathans Famous hot dogs yes, with buns in 10 minutes. Thats 17,980 calories, 372 grams of saturated fat, 44,020 milligrams of sodium, and 1,488 grams of carbs. Or to put it another way: Its the equivalent of 149 pats of butter, 19 spoonfuls of salt and 99 slices of bread. In 10 minutes flat.
Even one hot dog can be one too many, thanks to the high sodium and saturated fat content: As much as a third of the upper-limit recommended consumption for each can be packed into a single regular-size frank. And then there are the added nitrites, linked to a potential increase in certain types of cancer. Its all tucked into a (usually) white bun.
But thats not to say that all hot dogs are off-limits. With a few key swaps, its possible to build a better dog to enjoy at your Fourth of July cookout.

(102,357 posts)Uncured and nitrate free. Eating in moderation is really not an issue (and these--$15+ at Costco for 12) are nice to have on occasion.
FWIW, those "eating contests" really make me nauseous-- and this from someone who has been known to binge eat at times over the years. Never approaching that, though.

(99,708 posts)Had a chance to eat it in stew back then. Then about 20 years ago or so a local burger joint had buffalo burgers and I tried one.
The grocery store had fresh buffalo steaks and ground buffalo on a 1/2 price sale. We stocked up the freezer.

(41,694 posts)One thing I've learned about all those "healthful" alternatives is that most of them taste like crap.

(38,578 posts)The truth of the matter is that for most people, if you eat a balanced diet, a treat here and there (be it a cookie, or a hot dog or whatever) isn't going give you a heart attack or make you fat.

(41,861 posts)I checked, SAFEWAY has it. I want to try them. 110g of Sodium is not bad! Since baseball season has started I have been craving a hot dog. Buns, mustard, onions, what more could you ask for?

(41,861 posts)The Butcher told me they were out of it! So I grabbed them all looking for the lowest sodium I could find. Turkey dogs seem to be there, and one had 440g of sodium so I grabbed two. Tonight, while listening to the game, if I hear someone in the back ground yell "hot dog!" I will smile, cause I got mine!!!

(39,961 posts)but as for what more could you ask for, add some cheese to that . And more mustard!
yuiyoshida
(41,861 posts)Swiss cheese? I don't think I have ever had a hotdog with cheese at the ball park. I know I have had it with Chilly beans and some kind of yellow cheese. It was not bad. Chilly dogs are pretty good especially with a bit of Tabasco on it. Yum! Lots of good eating ahead!!

(39,961 posts)with cheese mustard and onions! Any kind of cheese, really. I prefer cheddar, but cheese of any sort has a place on a hot dog .
I think we have very similar tastes in food! .

Habanero and cream cheese on thick black bread like pumpernickel. YUM YUM YUM.

(25,816 posts)Dice the jalapenos and cook in a small saucepan with a bit of butter and a bit of water, stirring until they brown and get crisp. Much of the heat is gone but the flavor remains. Sprinkle on baked potato or whatever. Yum.

(34 posts)plenty of recepies on the internet and it is very easy to do.
You pick the critter and spices, grind it up, stuff it and cook it, tt is the only way to ensure the quality of what you are putting into your dog.

(19,847 posts)No first hand knowledge here but at some point wouldn't a body give up and just try to push along the excess and not try to fully digest it?
Silent3
(15,265 posts)I wouldn't be too surprised if part of the answer often is that a good portion of the food gets vomited up after whatever period of time you need to keep it down to win such a contest.
But if you don't puke out the excess, then just how insistent is the human body on trying to extract all the calories it can out of a megadose of food, and to the extent it can't handle all of those calories, how does passing mostly undigested food work?
Maybe all it takes is a bit of googling to find out the probably disgusting answers to these mysteries.

(41,861 posts)Americans eat approximately 21.4 million hot dogs at Major League baseball games every year. Evidently, Red Sox fans really love hot dogs. They consume around 1.67 million at their games alone. You can find more information here: http://www.myfoxla.com/dpps/news/dpgoh-americans-to-devour-hot-dog-at-baseball-games-fc-20100406_6921121

(3,447 posts)As for turkey...yah, no, not going that far. I don't eat more than a couple dogs per month, and I use the Oscar Meyer Lean Beef ones with 60 cal/dog. I don't think a living human being without infinite time could even remotely try to keep proper track of sodium, fat, carbs, protein, and all that in some kind of appropriate balance; I'll stick to 'roughly calories and don't overdo the sugar/fat' and be content. I don't think my poor lil brain will handle more!
yuiyoshida
(41,861 posts)good to check the labels. Hot Dogs as you might imagine are very very high in Sodium. The ones I bought were 440g of Sodium..those are far better than the 800g and up...Even eating them once in a while... the sodium increases your high blood pressure..that can lead to many problems down the road.
Shandris
(3,447 posts)Sodium is one of those things that really bugs me; I'm aware of it occasionally (usually right -after- I needed to be!), but I really -should- be watching out for. Thankfully, I just discovered my BP dropped 10 whole points after stopping smoking 6 months ago, so I have a bit of leeway, but I won't if I'm not careful.
I just went shopping last night, so I went and checked the new package of dogs I bought (the Lean ones I mentioned) and they register in at 380. Still a whopping 16% per dog, but a 2-dog meal with salad with a properly-chosen dressing will keep it all under 50%. Given I only eat twice a day, that's doable for now. 10 years from now I may have to reconsider one of those turkey alternatives, but goddess help me if I'm in a rush to do so!

(7,720 posts)A hotdog is a wiener on a bun. That event, which I find disgusting, is a wiener and bun eating contest.
As to 'healthful' hotdogs (or wieners), there is no point to it. If a wiener, bacon for that matter, is not cured, it is not worth the calories and likely does not taste like a real wiener or bacon. I would eat turkey bacon, but only if it's cured.
