CATHERINE THOMPSON MAY 6, 2014, 7:29 AM EDT
Jon Stewart tore into Fox News on Monday's "The Daily Show" for the network's "hypocritical outrage" on the attacks in Benghazi, Libya.
The comedian pointed out that the Benghazi attacks were the subject of numerous congressional hearings and briefings, plus hundreds of news stories -- Benghazi was mentioned on 1,101 Fox News programs alone in the past year. But that hasn't been enough to grind the Benghazi outrage machine to a halt.
"You know, there are very few things we've heard more about in the past year and a half," Stewart said. "The only thing we've heard more about in the past year and a half may be the Kardashians."
He then ripped conservatives for their laser-like focus on the intelligence failure that contributed to the loss of American lives in Benghazi, pointing out that intelligence failures contributing to the Iraq War -- even outright lies from top officials like Condoleezza Rice and Dick Cheney about he presence of nuclear material in Iraq -- didn't provoke similar rage during the Bush administration.

(12,151 posts)Republicans aren't really trying to say Benghazi was an intelligence failure, which is the worst thing it seems it could have been. They're whipping the base around a variety of vague insinuations that make it sound more like Obama or Hilary Clinton somehow personally caused the attack, or personally prevented a response -- remember the "It took 20 minutes to make the phone call" or whatever the theme was they were trying for a while?
Weirdly, Stewart didn't really focus on the Republican insinuations that somehow Hilary Clinton or Obama were personally at fault. He gave them the benefit of the doubt for their best possible argument -- that ideal intelligence would prevent such a terrorist attack.
But he did point out that what Republicans lamely tried to characterize as the "intelligence failures" leading to Iraq were just flat lies. The example of the "aluminum tubes" story, floated by Cheney to the press, then immediately cited by him as though the story was the product of journalism, was a good example.
The levels of Republican entitlement and hypocrisy are just stunning here. Thousands dead after Bush laughed off the Bin Laden memo. Absolute, unquestionable lies and press manipulation regarding Iraq, which cost thousands more lives and several trillion dollars and counting. And yet they demand everyone assume Bush & Co. just made honest mistakes, while somehow Obama and Hilary are personally responsible for the one terrorist attack pulled off under their watch.

"I commend you for finally getting in touch with your inner outrage, because if I remember correctly from the previous decade, it was an emotion you did not seem comfortable addressing or expressing," Stewart said.
"Your hypocritical outrage and sanctimony aside, the reason its hard for everybody to get outraged by this terribly tragic and ultimately preventable disaster that was Benghazi is that everybody in this country has seen this movie before," he added later. "Only that movie was on an IMAX.
Graham and company are idiots for pushing this claim after ignoring the Iraq war

(5,611 posts)Their focus is so absurd that it is like performance art -- but of course they never, ever mention the lies we were fed concerning WMDs -- lies thousands died for -- and Cheney's obscene "mushroom cloud" scare tactic.
