1. On that one issue it seems possible that younger and libertarian conservatives

could get on board. However, the older white males (the guys who thing it all started going downhill in the late 60s) who make up their core constituency will oppose it. So it's hard to say.

note the lack of "fuck marijuana" hit-and-runs? it's almost like some threads permit proposals of explicitly strategic and temporary alliances--and others don't (because the Germans did Pearl Harbor, or summat)

13. I think it's hilarious when libertarians think they can pick off liberal votes. Never happen.

On the other hand, libertarians are ripe picking grounds for Democrats. Just wash away a bit of the ignorance.

7. Probably more than one issue we can get along when it comes to personal freedoms

Pot is one of the better ones to start with.

Where it all will breakdown is when it comes to corporate freedoms. The right worships at that altar.

10. With the more libertarian-leaning part of the RW, yeah.

The corporate tool component, however, will probably continue to support marijuana prohibition, since the reasons for enacting that prohibition in the first place were largely a matter of protecting profits. Big chunks of the RW (and in particular RW politicians) are basically sock puppets for those interests.

12. Not seeing a lot of evidence that Democrats in general are against the War on Drugs.

There's lots of tacit as well as explicit approval for the War on Drugs here on DU, and the National Democratic Party's official position is in favor, as well.

15. I don't believe in "left - right coalitions"
Thu May 1, 2014, 04:36 PM

They never end well and at the end of the day the right wing always seems to wind up with more chips on their side of the table than ours...To say nothing of the fact that it's *always* the left who keeps foolishly reaching out for coalitions and bipartisan partnerships...

DUers would do well to learn from history...

The righties who vote for legalization, decriminalization, or medicinal cannabis will claim to be libertarian in position.

That being said, I hope that we do get a large chunk of the state's voters to allow the use of medicinal cannabis.

however, explicit collaboration with the Right is not a good idea. Welcome their votes on the issue by all means, but promoting or compromising the Right is as wise as consorting with poisonous snakes.
